Another year, another record-low in All-Star Game viewership. |

This is what Ken Levine wrote in his blog last year regarding the MLB All-Star Game:

I generally agree with Levine as most of his comments apply to this year's game as well. I spent much of the time figuring out which team each player represented from the scant info FOX provided, having to look on the player's sleeve logo when batting -- as all the helmets had on them were "A" or "N."
So much inane banter most of the time. Fox's broadcast was pretty terrible in my opinion. They dropped the ball in a big way, pun intended! |

I understand Ken's frustration, but this is little like Blanche DuBois lamenting the loss of Belle Reve.
As JR Ewing once said, "once you give up integrity, the rest is a piece of cake". The All Star game was sold off piece by piece with the final piece being sold years ago. The concept is meaningless, it's not a game, it's a presentation of products, merchandising souvenirs, and an exhibition of various baseball skills over a two day period. The original article TMC linked made a valid point, comparing the ratings to what once was isn't fair. The ratings are good based on what is now the standard for an ota network special. That's all that matters to Fox, all that matters to MLB, and sadly all that matters to the current fan base. So try to enjoy it for what it now is, or ignore it because of what it has become. |

It was a good game. It dragged on for a low scoring game. MLB still has the best All-Star Game.
They should bring back teams wearing their own uniforms. I know he gets a lot of criticism, but I miss Joe Buck calling big games. Joe Davis doesn't bring the same level of excitement. |

Also, I too wish that Major League Baseball would go back to having All-Stars wear their teams' uniforms. That's what really made the All-Star Game stand out when compared to other professional sports leagues. Maybe, in my eyes, it doesn't make for a fun viewing experience if everybody looks and dresses the same. Especially when the MLB All-Star Game as a mandate that every team, regardless of win-loss record, needs to have at least one player represent them. |

I think that interleague play really hurt the relevancy and importance of the All-Star Game. Before 1997, the first year that interleague play was used, the only time that the American and National Leagues faced off besides the World Series, was the All-Star Game. I know that this may sound cliched, but there really was a lot of mystique, excitement, and intrigue behind the idea of players facing off against other players who they normally wouldn't get a chance to see during the season. But since it's practically now, an everyday occurrence for the AL and NL to play against each other, it goes without saying that seeing something like that in the All-Star Game is no longer "unique" or that big a deal. I'm sure that there are other factors, especially for the 2023 ASG, but interleague play is to me, the biggest factor or reason behind the All-Star Game gradually declining in ratings over the past 20 some odd years. |
