After doing over 100 episodes of Three's Company, it's a shame Richard Kline never got to star in his own successful sitcom. He was so good on Three's Company...

When Threes Company returned in May 1981, the ratings were back in the top 5 again:

Dying to Meet You #4
The Case of the Missing Blonde #2
Honest Jack Tripper #4

With all the news about the SAG strike, it was mentioned that the last one was in 1980 and it lasted 3 months. I think that could be the answer. That was the 80-81 season.

Good Point I didnt think of that and that season it was only 22 episodes made. But it looks they made up for it the next season with a total of 28 episodes

It was in the plan for him to have his own sitcom, a spin off of Threes Company. It was not called Threes A Crowd. I dont know if he turned it down but he and Don Knots declined to appear in the spin off. So they revamped the show, called it Threes A Crowd and offered it to John.
I would love to know if it was a serious offer. He did appear in one episode of the Ropers and Threes A Crowd. Its hard to believe someone would turn down a sitcom. But the original intent was to have a Threes Company spin off with him as the star. How serious and how far that went I dont know.

I have to correct myself a bit here. It was ABC that passed on the sitcom spinoff with Larry. From wikipedia:

Three's Company's producers were eager to capitalize on these spin-offs. In 1979, they had spun off The Ropers, based on George and Mildred, but the show ran for only one and a half seasons. Executive producers Ted Bergmann and Don Taffner attempted to adapt the Robin's Nest series, but without John Ritter. A pilot for a series called Byrd's Nest was written with the same premise as Robin's Nest, with a young man living with his older girlfriend and her disapproving father, who owns the building in which they live. The series was planned as a spin-off from Three's Company and possibly a vehicle for Richard Kline, but ABC passed on the idea. As Three's Company entered its eighth season in September 1983, ratings took a dive in the face of stiff competition from the new NBC series The A-Team, and ABC approved the development of a new series to be called Three's a Crowd, starring Ritter.
