I would like to know the Nielsen Ratings for Maude after the 1976-1977 and 1977-1978 seasons! I already know what the ratings were from 1972-1973 to 1975-1976(top 10 or better)!!

"Maude", as you know, was a Top-10 show in it's first four seasons. however, my ratings information includes only the Top-30 of every TV season. i'm a bit amazed as to how the show could rank #4 in 1976 with a 25.0 rating but not even manage to crack the Top-30 in 1977? talk about a major ratings dive! the show ended on a sour note when the 1977-1978 season started. Bea Arthur was sure that the show wouldn't get picked up for a sixth season but when it did she reluctantly agreed to a sixth season but in January 1978 she had enough. she told Norman Lear and associates that she was leaving the show in the spring! so in April 1978 CBS aired it's final first-run episode of "Maude" with little fan fare. usually, TV shows air first-run episodes into late May and then shut down for the summer rerun season before jumping back into the grind in the fall. "Maude" and "Good Times" and a few more are some of the rare examples of shows that get yanked in mid-season.

Well Jerry I did some research on why Maude took a dive in the 77-78 TVseason. Maude could not compete with Monday Night Football which at that time was up and coming. And since Maude had a 9:30pm slot, Monday football was already in progress since it started at 9pm. Also Maude was taken off it's oringinal Tuesday 8pm slot where it did so well from 72-75 because Happy Days was too popular during 77-78 season which also forced the ratings to go down for the show Good Times. |
