Default Could you guys help me out with a math question, how much was stolen? :/

In a similar situation to the Customer stealing $800 from me without me knowing, YEARS ago, a Customer bought a $4 drink and gave me a $100 bill. The register was having problems, so while I was distracted by the register's problems, the Customer snatched the $100 out of my hand and palmed it. I didn't notice and when the register got working again I put my hand in the register fully thinking I had dropped her $100 in it, an easy mistake when we often have 30 $100 bills in it. I ended up giving her a free $96 plus a free drink!

My Boss the next day showed me the camera footage and showed me she snatched the $100 out of my hand and palmed it while the register was having problems. My Boss said something like,"She stole $200 and a free drink from us with her sneaky theft. She's despicable!" My other Boss also said the woman stole $200.

Uh, how did she steal $200? She stole $96 plus the drink.

I suppose you would have had to have given the customer $100 back plus the note you unwittingly had snatched out of your hand. This must have been what your boss witnessed on camera for the sum he mentioned to be correct, even though if it did happen that way he was $4 out.

I'm pretty sure the store is out $96 and the $4 drink. I gave her $96 in change not knowing she snatched the $100 right back out of my hand and palmed it while I was distracted with the register problems. I don't know why my bosses say it was a $200 theft.

She only stole $100. The theft occurred when she swiped the bill from your hand. The $4 drink and $96 change have a value of $100, so no matter how you look at it, she walked away with $100 of free stuff.

Those were my calculations too. The ONLY logical explanation for my bosses thinking she stole $200 is them counting the snatched $100 as a theft and then her accepting $96 she knew she didn't deserve and accepting the $4 drink she didn't pay for. So they probably thought,"Snatched $100 is the first theft. Her accepting $96 in cash and getting a free $4 drink was the second theft."
