I happened to see this on Youtube. I didn't even know this tournament existed. It was played last week. I don't know what the format was but somehow players from the US women's soccer team played a game against older retired men, some in their 50's. I'm sure if the women won the game the mainstream media would have had it on 24 hours a day. They had special rules for these games. I don't know how many mean's or women's teams there were, or how many games were played men vs women. The retired men not only beat the women 12-0, as soon as they scored the 12th goal, the match was called. Who knows what the final score would have been without the 12 goal rule. This men's team wasn't even good enough to win the tournament. |

What's your point? How do you expect the news to cover it when you weren't even aware of the tournament?
It would be the same result in any other team sport like hockey or basketball. I remember reading a few years ago the US Women's National Soccer team lost to a high school boys team in an exhibition or scrimmage. Male athletes have a distinct physical advantage over their female counterparts. This is why there aren't any women's teams in men's professional sports leagues. Not that it would have changed the final result, but you left out a few details and some context. 1. It was 7-on-7 format on a smaller field. They had 20 minute halves with no offsides or throw-ins. There were 32 teams in the tournament. 2. It wasn't their A or even B team. The team featured mostly retired former USWNT internationals. The shots were 39-5, so to lose only 12-0 almost seems respectable. They only lost 5-0 and 7-1 in their other games. 3. Wrexham's team featured current, former, and guest players. Some of them were retired in their 40s. It's not like they were playing 70 or 80 year old geezers from a beer league. They were mostly professionals or guys still in good shape. 4. They were playing for $1 million. They probably tried to run up the score as much possible to get a better goal differential. It would have been much more lopsided without the valiant effort of the US goalkeeper. Look at the size of this dude (who scored 4 goals) in the thumbnail. He looks like a linebacker. Even a man would struggle to take the ball away from him. |
