This rare 1995 Bea Aurthur interview offers a clue and a hint to some of the tension on the set. Around the 19:50 part she is asked about any discord on the set and Bea diverts the question and gives a generic answer. Its more important what she didn't say compared to what she said. She could have given a generic answer like "we all get along but of course we have differences like any other group," But Bea just wont say anything. Looking back, it says ALOT.

Bea is not my favorite actress, but she was professional by not dragging her fellow cast mates through the mud.

We all know that there was friction on the set because it was featured on the cover of tabloid magazines...week after week...

She also mentioned that she never watches any of her shows which I think is very common among TV stars. Movie stars will usually go to a premier to see themselves on the big screen so at least they see themselves once on film.

Its not about her talking dirt about cast members. No one would do that especially Bea. The big clue is she did not deny the rumor or just give the standard answer " we all got along and had fun on the set every day" which was what everyone else was saying. Her answer is blunt honest and now that we know the truth just makes her answer interesting.

It was not in an interview. She called Betty that on the set when Betty made fun of Bea's blooper and the studio audience laughed. Bea confronted the director about it and that word came out. Supposedly.
