It seems that the fall TV upfronts season isn't as exciting as it used to be nor do viewers tend to look forward to it as much as before because the selections are not very tempting, and the better series tend to gravitate towards the cable and streaming channels. This has made it difficult for most of the Canadian networks as well when they fly south to gather new acquisitions for their fall lineups, having to make do with fair materials themselves. The one exception is the CBC, which normally begins the festivities, and that's where I will start as well.
CBC TV Canada's oldest and only privately-owned network (like PBS with ads but with no pledge breaks!), CBC has made many additions to their programming lineup as well as their streaming platforms, highlighted by CBC Gem, which is where you can stream all of their TV programs for free, live and on demand. Along with CBC Gem, the network added CBC News Explore to its streaming catalogue last year, and this fall will see 2 more channels added: CBC Comedy and CBC News, divided among local regions. The first to launch will be CBC News BC. The other provinces and territories should follow soon after. The main CBC TV network will have many new original programs broken down into different genres. This is what will be offered: Comedy - "One More Time" - About a hearing-impaired manager of a sporting-goods store and his fellow employees. Drama - "Blackberry" - The story of the Blackberry, the world's first smart phone, invented by Jim Balsillie (who once tried and failed to get an NHL franchise for the city of Hamilton, Ontario) and his partner Mike Lazaridis. "Bones Of Crows" - Native Cree Canadian Aline Spears and her family are driven away from their home and are forced to survive on their own. "Allegiance" - A rookie cop from a family of police officers is forced to choose between career and family when her own father gets arrested. "Wild Cards" - A hard, no-nonsense cop and a clever female ex-con team up to solve crimes in the heart of Vancouver. Returning to CBC this fall: Comedy - "This Hour Has 22 Minutes" (Season 31) and "Son Of A Critch" (Season 13). Drama - "Murdoch Mysteries" and "Heartland" (both Season 17) Press Release CBC Gem |

CHCH TV
After CBC kicked off the Canadian Fall upfronts yesterday, the next presentation came from the IndieNET group of channels: CHEK TV (Vancouver), NTV (Newfoundland), Yes TV (Ontario and Alberta) and CHCH (Hamilton, Ont.) CHCH is the largest and most watched of these channels because of their variety of popular series, both in the evening and daytime, where they aim to offer the best retro series anywhere in North America. Well, they used to be the best retro station around. Now, I'm not quite sure. Slowly but surely, they seem to be focusing more on building up their local news and nightly shows rather than the great retro series that have literally kept the station alive for the past 6 years. Lately, the schedule has looked a little dull and stale but there will be changes coming starting next week. Normally, when CHCH gets to present their fall schedule, there is tremendous secrecy involved, which has always baffled me, but this year, thanks to a few key sources, I was able to get a few scraps of info that I wish to share with you here. This is how I see it breaking down: Leaving soon: Matlock, The Beverly Hillbillies, Laverne and Shirley, The Andy Griffith Show. Staying and returning soon: Gilligan's Island (Friday June 9), Dynasty, Pictionary, The Love Boat, The Lucy Show, I Dream Of Jeannie (back this fall after a long absence), Hawaii 5-0 (The original series. The reboot is on YES TV.), I Love Lucy (now seen back to back at 10 am for now). New this fall to CHCH: Three's Company, Mad About You, NewsRadio, and Silver Spoons. All good shows but I wish they would have gone with older series instead of adding stuff from the 90s. Maybe those will be on the way later on in the fall. We'll see. If I get any more info than this, I will post it very soon. Sneak Peek At Fall 2023 Schedule "Sneak Peek" Video IndieNET Profile Page |

CITY TV (Rogers Media)
Canada's Upfronts continued this morning with a presentation from Rogers Media, one of Canada's largest companies, owner of TV channels like Sportsnet, FX Canada, FXX Canada, OMNI TV, and flagship network CITY TV. As the main network, CITY may arguably have the weakest primetime schedule overall. The press release below proclaims that CITY TV has TV's biggest nights, which is not surprising since they were likely very easy to put together. Each night seems to follow a specific theme. Wednesdays have NBC's 3 Chicago dramas airing together, Thursday is Law and Order night, which next spring will include a new Canadian version "Law and Order: Toronto". That should be very interesting to watch. Look for it to appear on NBC as well. Sundays will see the return of FOX's animation series to CITY, and, best of all, Saturdays will continue to be hockey nights as "Hockey Night In Canada" comes back to CITY and Sportsnet. Other new series coming this fall will be drama series "Found" and "Irrational" and reality show "The Golden Bachelor". On the streaming front, CITY has a paid service where you can watch all these shows that it calls - what else - CITY TV+. For free, they have partnered with TUBI, one of the top sites in the world, where you will likely see a lot better shows than they'll have this fall. GLOBAL TV (Corus Entertainment) Once the TV landscape gets back to normal, CORUS Entertainment - home to a number of specialty channels as well as streaming giant Pluto TV Canada - will be ready with their new fall series and acquisitions, with their main network Global TV being front and centre. New series to watch for on Global this fall include the new "Matlock" reboot, with Kathy Bates taking on Andy Griffith's old role, and "Elsbeth" about a female lawyer who fights crime with help from the NYPD. Along with a female Matlock, Global will also have a female Robin Hood, in a new original series called "Robyn Hood" about a hip-hop rap artist named Robyn and her band The Hood. It looks like the strike can't end fast enough if this is what we have to look forward to this fall. Also new to Global is "Doc", about a doctor who returns to her job after suffering amnesia during a serious car accident. The show is adapted from a successful Italian TV series called "Doc - Nelle Tue Mani" which means "Doc - In Your Hands". The only new comedy that will be premiering later this season will be "Poppa's House" starring Damon Wayans Sr. and Jr. Returning series include "Ghosts", "So Help Me Todd", "Abbott Elementary", the NCIS dramas on Tuesdays, the FBI dramas on Mondays, and encore showings of "Ghosts", "The Neighborhood", and "Abbott Elementary" throughout the week. Those spots will likely be filled during the midseason. GLOBAL TV - Fall Preview 2023-24 Press Release Corus - Specialty Channel Highlights Fall Schedule 2023-24 |

CTV (Bell Media)
Last, but not least, we come to the final main network to present their shows during the fall upfronts this morning which is CTV, the largest and most watched network in Canada for the 22nd consecutive season, as is mentioned in the links below. Like its US neighbor FOX, CTV has not announced an official night-by-night primetime fall schedule, but it did announce a number of new acquisitions and original series that they hope will keep their impressive title streak alive. Leading the new imports is "Snake Oil", a new game show produced and hosted by the super-annoying David Spade, drama series "Tracker", "Rescue: Hi-Surf", and "High Potential", and the obligatory reality series "Special Forces: World's Toughest Test". Another new reality series called "The Traitors: Canada" highlights CTV's original Canadian series which will include new seasons of original CTV Hits "Transplant", "Battle Of The Generations", and "Children Ruin Everything", a sitcom which will enter its 3rd season on CTV and will also have its first season shown on CW in the US. Returning to CTV this fall will be familiar hits like "Young Sheldon", "The Conners", "Grey's Anatomy", and "The Good Doctor" and other hit series that will be seen on CTV and CTV2 for the first time this fall. These include "Night Court", "The Amazing Race", "The Voice", "Celebrity Wheel Of Fortune", and "Celebrity Jeopardy". With these big additions to an already strong lineup, I can see CTV's winning streak hitting 23 years and counting this season. On the streaming front, all of their current shows can be watched for free on CTV.ca with classic series seen on CBC Throwback. CTV also has a paid streaming service called Crave, which is like a Canadian version of Netflix that offers many premium movies and series like "Friends", "Frasier", and "The Big Bang Theory". Crave had been running ad-free until now. At today's upfronts, it was announced that certain series like the ones I mentioned will now include ads in order to copy the Netflix model.
