Well there are some similiarities between PS and L&S-read below

1. Both shows started 4 years before the following decade
2. Both shows ended three years after the following decade
3. Both shows involved same sex living together
4.Both shows were televised on ABC

This is interesting Solomon, I always saw many similarities, but it never dawned on me that the shows actually did start, and end, ten years apart.
While there were many similarities, and PS really began to copy L&S rather indiscreetly, especially in later seasons("Nightmare Vacation", "Bye Bye Birdie", and " Fright Night" to name a few), the shows had their differences too. For one thing, Larry and Balki were never really poor, at least not after the first season or so, and PS had no Lenny & Squiggy type characters. In some ways, PS reminds me some of I Love Lucy as well, because it involved the girlfriends so much; Larry would be Lucy, with all of his outrageous plans.. .
All said, while Laverne & Shirley will always be considered the classic, I enjoy PS more.. maybe because I grew up with it, or the fact that I'm a guy, who knows. It's not the best show that ever was, but in my opinion, it's funnier then just about any show on at the moment.

Another thing to take into consideration is that both shows had the same creative team, for the most part: Miller/Boyett produced them both, and I'm sure this helps to explain a lot of the similarities, plus repeated storylines..
