During the 73-74 tv season, the brady bunch could not compete with Sanford and Son at 8pm on Friday nights. The ratings for the Brady Bunch would plunge as the new hit Sanford and Son was in the top 5.

Actually, The Brady Bunch was knocked off the air by ABC. The ratings had plummeted due to competition from NBC but if ABC wanted to save the show they would have. But as everyone knows, The Brady Bunch would have ended after the 5th season, no matter what, at least the original premise would have ended.
Robert Reed was leaving the show, one way or another, and The Brady Bunch without Robert Reed is like Sanford & Son without Redd Foxx. |

So you are telling me that even if the Brady Bunch finished #1 after the 5th season, that they would have still canceled the show because robert reed was leaving? i don't think so-the only shows that networks cancel are the ones that stink in the ratings |

Sorry to differ with you, but Cheers and Family Ties are prime examples. I've heard during their first seasons both 1982-1983 Season, they were two of the lowest ranked shows, especially Cheers, yet they were renewed for 2nd seasons. In many cases, ratings have nothing to do with shows going on for future seasons, it's the network's faith in the show. NBC obviously had faith in both shows and it's a good thing they did. It's the networks that order tinkering to be done to the shows otherwise, The Facts of Life most certainly would not have gone on to a 2nd season as well. Of course there's also a very classic case of Bridget Loves Bernie. It was canceled after one season (1972-1973 Season). Overall for the season it ranked #5, with All in the Family being #1. As well as Chicken Soup which aired for one season (1989-1990 Season), yet ranked #14 for the entire season. Madman of the People from 1994-1995 Season canceled yet it ranked #12.
With the Brady Bunch, my comment had much of my own feelings in it, so please pardon that. I just think if Robert Reed had left, it would have been pointless to go on. On the other hand, if The Brady Bunch had finished at Number 1, ABC would not have canceled it but renewed it and major premise changes would have taken place. If that had been the case, Robert Reed and Robbie Rist would have been gone, according to Sherwood Schwartz. |
