Thumbs down Hollywood Reporter: "10 Shows Canceled Faster Than 'The Playboy Club'"

10 TV Shows Canceled Faster Than "The Playboy Club"

NBC's 1960s drama saw a flurry of controversy even before it premiered this fall, with the Parents Television Council targeting the show for objectifying and degrading women.

Due to the PTCs campaign, several advertisers pulled their ads once the show began to air. The controversial drama premiered to meager ratings, and was axed after just three episodes.

Still, the series had a longer life than several shows over the years that were put out of their misery after one or two episodes.

1. "Public Morals" (1996)

Created and executive produced by Steven Bochco, the CBS comedy centering on a vice squad was quickly killed off, although one character, John Irvin, survived to move on to Bochco’s "NYPD Blue".

2. "Lawless" (1997)

The FOX detective series starring NFL star Brian Bosworth was a FOX fumble. Its only episode aired on a Saturday, without any previews for critics.

3. "Emily's Reasons Why Not" (2006)

ABC had heavy promotional campaign for the comedy starring Heather Graham as a woman who decides that if she can list 5 reasons to break up with a man, then she does so.

ABC broke up with the series after the premiere drew only 6.2 million viewers.

4. "Anchorwoman" (2007)

Former model Lauren Jones wanted to become an anchorwoman in the partially scripted FOX series, but the former Miss New York wasn’t loved by America, and the show was pulled after just one episode.

5. "Viva Laughlin" (2007)

Even having Hugh Jackman onboard as EP and cast member couldn’t save CBS’ musical drama from losing its voice after it debuted to a meager 8.4 million viewers — a pittance compared to the 21.2 million viewers that watched "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation", which preceded it.

6. "The Beautiful Life" (2009)

The CW drama about the modeling world starring Mischa Barton and produced by Ashton Kutcher was canceled after a mere 1.5 million people tuned in for its premiere, and only 1 million caught its second episode.

7. "Quarterlife" (2008)

The drama series about a group of young artists originally found success as a webseries on MySpace, but its move over to NBC as a mid-season replacement was an unsuccessful venture, and led to its cancelation.

The remaining 5 episodes aired on Bravo.

8. "Lonestar" (2010)

While it received critical acclaim, FOX’s primetime soap "Lone Star" featuring James Wolk as a charismatic Texas con man couldn’t get the ratings it needed to survive, and became the first casualty of the 2010 season.

9. "My Generation" (2010)

The ABC faux-documentary show that followed around high school classmates 10 years after graduation was given the axe after its second episode ratings were down 31% from its already bleak premiere episode numbers.

10. "The Paul Reiser Show" (2011)

NBC pulled the plug on the semi-autobiographical show starring Paul Reiser after the premiere episode became the network’s lowest-rated in-season comedy ever.
