Default Your Third Molars: Wisdom Teeth, Why We Get Them

and many don't, I did not that I know of. My grandgirl listened to the dentist
and had them removed. If she were to do it over, she would not. What she knows now. My grandson who is 22 got them but never removed.

Here is a good article on the Whys of WISDOM teeth.... Dentists make mega bucks on this tough work, digging out teeth.. Now could be many need them yanked out but I'm believing many do not need to do it. And yes it is major major "surgery" in the mouth.

Keep all the WISDOM you have.

This is a side of the Wisdom Teeth world no one talks about.

Bringing this one up on Wisdom teeth as an old thread appeard on the subject.

Why Are They Called “Wisdom” Teeth?

Why Are They Called “Wisdom” Teeth?
Third molars have been referred to as “teeth of wisdom” since the Seventeenth Century and simply “wisdom teeth” since the Nineteenth Century. The third molars generally appear much later than other teeth, usually between the ages of 17 and 25 when a person reaches adulthood. It is generally thought among linguists that they are called wisdom teeth because they appear so late, at an age when a person matures into adulthood and is “wiser” than when other teeth have erupted.

Lately, science has added some credence to the idea that the third molar does indeed erupt when a person is “wiser”. Recent research has shown the brain continues to grow and develop right on through adolescence: in fact, most researchers believe the brain does not reach full maturity until the age of 25. Perhaps, then, our ancestors weren't so far off the mark — that the eruption of “wisdom teeth” is a sign that the carefree days of childhood have given way to the responsibilities of adulthood.

It's probably too late for me. I already had a lower-right third molar removed in March of 2015 because of a huge cavity.

I guess it's possible to live a perfect life without ANY third molars. But if a person were to live with 24 permanent teeth rather than a full set of 32 (with just your first molars), will that compromise your eating ability? You're implying that the loss of all of one's third molars makes that person prone to making more mistakes or getting into more accidents.

I'm implying no such thing. I've lived my long life void of wisdom teeth and -- mistakes and more accidents??? I don't think so.
