Default Another Store Announces Bankruptcy: Bed, Bath & Beyond

Here we go again with another brick-and-mortar retailer bailing out. This was their message to email subscribers today:

To Our Valued Customers:

Earlier today, Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. filed for voluntary Chapter 11 protection.

We appreciate that our customers have trusted us through the most important milestones in their lives – from going to college, to getting married, to settling into a new home, to having a baby – and we wanted to reach out to you to explain what this means.

Our stores are open and serving customers. However, we have initiated a process to wind down operations.

What This Means for Our Customers

We wanted to make you aware that several of our programs and policies may be changing soon. As of today:

• We expect to process returns and exchanges in accordance with our usual policies until May 24, 2023, for items purchased prior to April 23, 2023

• We expect Gift Cards, Gift Certificates, and Loyalty Certificates will be accepted through May 8, 2023

• We will no longer accept coupons or Welcome Rewards+ discounts beginning April 26, 2023

• We expect all in-stock orders placed online both prior and after our bankruptcy filing to be fulfilled at this time

Registry
Your registry data is safe. You can still view your registry at this time. We expect to partner with an alternative platform where you will be able to transfer your data and complete your registry. We will provide details in the coming days.

Bed, Bath and Beyond has been dying for quite awhile now. I have been in one of their stores on my hometown, it has some cool stuff in there but nothing that cannot be purchased at Walmart probably cheaper, or even in a other department store like Macy’s. I can see the “Bed” part, sheets, pillows, blankets. Bath? What is that, soap? Towels? They don’t sell tubs or shower fixtures. Beyond is sort of vague, I guess it’s everything else that isn’t Bed or Bath. The location in my hometown really isn’t that large, one can see everything in the store in about ten minutes. I just think that even Amazon haters like me who like physical shopping just isn’t going to think of this retailer first, when there is again, Walmart and Target, and Macy’s.

The problem is the lack of customers. They can’t really say that they will support their loyal customers when all of them go to Walmart or worse, online shopping which is Amazon (puke).

Maybe they can do like Radio Shack and be just a money laundering operation.

I don't know how much trouble the BBB store had in my area, but along the way The Tuesday Morning store got here, and now it's op it's way out.

So so complex and the Big Money of today's times is at work and doing their jobs.

And yep I miss the Sears, Penney's, K Mart world I grew up in.

There's still a JCPenney in my area, but likely they're hanging on for dear life. My parents used to shop the older location regularly, most of my family's clothes in the 1960s and '70s came from there.

The name of Bed Bath & Beyond maybe would be more accurate as "Kitchens & Beyond."

My experience with Bed Bath & Beyond has been the following: in years past I was getting competitive prices in gift buying there by using their coupons, which were good because they could be used for any item(s) as a "%" off. But the last couple of years, I stopped buying anything from their stores because they were just too high-priced, even after discount.

And they haven't always had great selection. For Christmas 2022 I bought an Oster fondue maker for my niece at a "Gabe's" store -- a good brand at a great low price. Out of curiosity, I then went next-door to B B & B to see how much theirs was selling for. There weren't any in stock -- despite being a much bigger store that carries that kitchen stuff.

B,B,& B was the only place, that I know of, where I could buy just a fitted sheet for my bed. I didn't have to buy the whole set of sheets.
I will miss their store.

If I were in the market for bed sheets, I'd sure look at ebay,. My one set does not wear out and over many yrs I've gotten rid of so many sheets.

My mom and I used to shop at Bed Bath And Beyond during Black Friday sales and we would find interesting stuff there and my mother liked their amazing stuff there. I can't imagine why Bed Bath And Beyond is going bankrupt and closing all their stores because when you get the general picture there is really not another store that sells all bedding and bathroom decor since Strouds "a bedding superstore" closed it's doors in the 2000's. And you can find bedding and bathroom decor at stores like Macy's or Target or Kohls and so what I think Bed Bath And Beyond were trying to do was trying to attract more customers but they failed to do so. My shopping center used to have a Bed Bath And Beyond and it got good business for many years until they closed when Michael's decided to move from my mall to that location and I only have two Bed Bath And Beyond stores left and this tells me why I haven't got any ads for Bed Bath And Beyond in my mail anymore. I hope they have big clearance sales when they finally come

I used to really love that store but retail isn't flourishing.

The thing that really frosts my balls (pardon the language) is when a retailer won't give me the same price in-store that their online shoppers get. Here I am, having made a trip to their store, while someone at home just needs to make a few clicks on their computer for a lower price (from the retailer's website). That happened to me this past Christmas with a book that was on my family's member's gift wish list.

If you're familiar with Menards stores, they now have robotic floor cleaners going up and down their aisles. Coupled with other brick-and-mortar retailers folding, between that and the new technology I have to wonder how many retail positions will be disappearing. I used to have to clean floors for the old Builder's Square every night.

Add Christmas Tree Shops to the list of defunct and soon-to-be gone retailers.

I just bought 50 greeting cards from Christmas Tree Shops ("Store Closing") at 20 cents each, for a total of $10. Most of those are Easter cards I'll be sending to my relatives in Greece over the next decade (if I live that long...!). That's the major holiday over there.

The store-closing liquidations can be worth checking out. I don't know where else I could hand-select a wide variety of "Made in USA" Easter greeting cards for 20 cents.

BB&B was just bought out by Overstock.com, which I found rather strange.
