Movie "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" Makes #1 for 3rd Weekend

Super Mario Bros Hits High Scores: Record Opening for Animated Pic at $377M+ WW, 5-Day U.S. Record $204M+
by Anthony D'Alessandro
April 9, 2023

As of this morning, the Super Mario Bros feature take of the Nintendo game didn’t gross $56M, rather a near $57M, for what is now a $146.36M 3-day, massive $33,1K theater average, and a record 5-day of –wow– $204.6M, per Universal this AM.

If overseas is still at $173M by tomorrow AM, then the new global opening record for an animated movie set by Super Mario Bros stands at $377.2M.

On a 3-day basis, it’s close to a three-way tie for second place between Amazon’s Air ($14.4M as of Sunday), Paramount/eOne’s Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves ($14.5M second weekend, -61%, $62.2M cume) and Lionsgate’s John Wick: Chapter 4 ($14.6M third weekend, -48%, $147M cume).

However, Amazon’s first global day-and-date release Air is definitely hitting $20.2M, a great start for a non-tentpole dramedy aimed at adults. That provides a lot of hope for other distributors with similar fare. The amount here for Air would make late MGM/Amazon Distribution Chief Erik Lomis beam, as he championed Air to pivot from a Prime Video debut to the big screen.

Saturday for the Ben Affleck-Matt Damon-Viola Davis-Chris Tucker-Jason Bateman movie is $5.8M, +16% over Friday.

Meanwhile, IFC’s Paint didn’t turn out to be a record opening, as industry estimates forecast on Saturday AM, but did post $750K for a $916 theater average at 819 locations.

Box Office Stunner: Super Mario Bros. Scores $92.5M in Second Weekend, Crosses $700M Globally
by Pamela McClintock
April 17, 2023

Universal and Illumination’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a bona fide blockbuster, and the first movie of the year that will soon cross the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office.

The Nintendo video game adaptation grossed a massive $92.5 million from 4,371 theaters in its second weekend of play at the North American box office, notably more than expected and representing a drop of just 37 percent, according to final numbers released Monday.

That’s up from Sunday’s already crazy-great estimate of $87 million, which marks the biggest second weekend ever for an animated film after surpassing Frozen 2 ($86 million).

Its foreign cume includes an impressive second-weekend gross of $102.5 million from 71 markets after dipping less than 28 percent (final foreign numbers were also up from Sunday’s estimate of $94 million).

The Pope’s Exorcist landed in second place with an estimated debut of $9.2 million from 3,178 theaters. Directed by Julius Avery, the film stars Russell Crowe as real-life figure Father Gabriele Amorth, a priest who acted as chief exorcist of the Vatican and who performed more than 100,000 exorcisms in his lifetime.

Overseas, the pic grossed another $10.4 million from 51 markets — including a strong $1.1 million in Italy — for a running foreign total of $27.4 million and global total of $33.6 million.

Holdover John Wick: Chapter 4 placed No. 3 with an estimated $7.9 million for a domestic tally of $160.1 million.

The movie has grossed another $18.6 million from 76 foreign markets for a stellar foreign tally of $189.6 million and a franchise-best $349.7 million globally.

Renfield came in #4 with a domestic debut of $8 million, according to Monday actuals. Renfield opened to $2.3 million from 46 markets overseas for a foreign start of $10 million and $18 million globally.

The pic, starring Nicholas Hoult in the titular role and Nicolas Cage as Count Dracula, follows Renfield as he tries to see if there’s another life for himself after serving for centuries as Dracula’s loyal aide.

Directed by Chris McKay, the New Orleans-set film also stars Awkwafina.

From Amazon, the Ben Affleck-starring sports drama Air sported a 10-day domestic cume of $34.3 million.

It earned another $6.2 million from 66 territories overseas for a foreign cume of $20.8 million.

Japanese anime maestro Makoto Shinkai’s coming-of-age anime adventure Suzume is the only new movie this weekend to boast glowing reviews and opened to an estimated $5 million from 2,170 theaters for Crunchyroll/Sony.

A hit in its home territory of Japan late last year, the film is now rolling everywhere else after playing in competition at the 2023 Berlinale. Overseas, the movie took in $6.3 million from 34 markets for a weekend total of $11.3 million.

Bleecker Street’s crime boss comedy Mafia Mamma, directed by Twilight helmer Catherine Hardwicke and starring Toni Collette opposite Monica Bellucci, opened to a disappointing $2 million from 2,002 locations.

Mafia Mamma is intended for females 25 and older, a demo that has been slow to return to the multiplex, but the bigger problem could be bad reviews.

New faith-based thriller Nefarious rounded out the top 10 chart in North America with an estimated opening of $1.3 million from 933 locations.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie Holds Off Evil Dead Rise for Its Third Weekend Box Office Victory
by Adam Bankhurst
April 23, 2023

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is jumping ever closer to $1 billion in its third weekend in theaters as it has brought in another $58.23 million domestically on its way to a global total of $871.83 million.

As reported by Comscore, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is sitting at $434.32 million in North America and only saw a minor drop of 37% from last week's $87 million performance.

Its $58.23 million run helped it secure the best third-weekend domestic box office earnings for an animated film as it passed Incredibles 2's $46.41 million.

As it stands, it has now placed just ahead of Spider-Man: No Way Home's $56.02 million to secure the 7th-best domestic third weekend ever.

Evil Dead Rise had a respectable opening despite losing to The Super Mario Bros. Movie with a domestic debut of $23.5 million.

Evil Dead Rise is the fifth entry in the Evil Dead film franchise.

Guy Ritchie's The Covenant opened to a third-place finish with $6.28 million.

The film tells the story of Jake Gyllenhaal's Sergeant John Kinley who is working to save an Afghan interpreter (Dar Salim) after he saves his life but is left to be hunted down by the Taliban.

John Wick: Chapter 4 took fourth place in its fifth weekend in theaters by collecting $5.75 million domestically.

In total, the fourth John Wick film has reached $168.88 million in North America.

Rounding out the top five was Air, which earned $5.54 million in its third weekend.
