that makes me laugh out loud. Great writing and full of silliness. Too bad there wasn't at least two more seasons.

Yeah, I read that during it's initial run, Gidget was not a hit, but in summer reruns right after it went off the air it was big! They should have brought it back that Fall for another season.

Poor Larue, always standing by helplessly as Gidget went off on one of her frenzies.

With respect to summer ratings, I mentioned this observation in a different thread that discussed summer ratings, Branch Rickey when commenting on an entirely different subject once made this very astute observation which seems apropos, "the most dangerous time in the life of a General Manager is March and September. Audience levels were lower during the summer, viewing patterns were different, school was out, people were on vacation and shows were in reruns. It's not the same as competing against new episodes of returning popular series. Gidget was well scheduled coming right after Patty Duke and later in the season after breakout smash Batman, it was given every chance it just didn't perform very well. Not throwing the baby out with the bath water, ABC saw the potential in Sally Field and quickly had her cast as the lead in a new series under development, The Flying Nun. |
