I never cared for Dick Sergeant in the role of Mr. Stevens in BEWITCH - I love Dick York, though. I am not a Dick Sergeant hater, either. I just do not like Dick Sergeant in this particular role. Who else agrees with me?

I agree about Dick Seargent. I prefer Dick York in the role. But they do resemble each other. He was just too negative to me and was always too fussy at Samantha.

I totally agree. Dick Sargent was not fit to play the part of Darrin one bit. He made Darrin seem like a total bigot, and he was kind of mean at Samantha. Dick York was really great playing Darrin, mainly because he was the original person playing him, and when someone like that does so good, you don't want a replacement.

Hello, I'm from the UK and Bewitched has been playing here on Channel 4 in the mornings. the series keeps being repeated, but they've never shown the black and white oines, which is a pity as I would love to see them. Currently the Dick Sargent episodes are being shown, just after the birth of Adam.
I'll have to agree that I don't like Mr Sargent's Darrin much either. Not the actor's fault though. Darrin just became meaner, more sarcastic and I enjoy it when Endora, Maurice or Uncle Arthur put spells on him. Unlike Dick York, who somehow seemed more vulnerable and likable. I think that he and Elizabeth Montgomery had better chemistry too. |

Dick York played Darrin blustery, over the top and in good fun. That worked much better than Sargent's sarcatic tone. Elizabeth and York had much better chemistry. They argued but you could tell there was love underneath. You did not get the same feeling from Sargent. Perhaps, his being gay had something to do with the lack of intimate chemistry. I know Elizabeth and Sargent were good friends, but it just didn't work near as well as with York.

I have to agree that Dick York was the better of the two Darrins. To be fair, in those cases where two different actors played the same role (for example, the two Lionels on "The Jeffersons"), you will always find that there are very few viewers who prefer the second person. I think we get use to the first actor in the role, and automatically resist accepting anyone else in that part. Interestingly enough, before the pilot episode of "Bewitched" filmed, Elizabeth Montgomery and her then-husband William Asher (the show's producer)originally wanted Dick Sargent for the role of Darrin. He was unable to do the show at that time due to another commitment. Several years later, when Dick York had to leave the cast because of health problems, they asked Dick Sargent a second time to take the part, and this time he was able to accept.

Dick Sargent had a calmer voice, but, on the other hand, he could be somewhat intimidating
