The ratings started to slip. That's why the producers decided to add some new characters and new scenery in the final season. For instance, Big and little Earl and having Raj move out of the house and into his own apartment with Rerun.

Braindamage pretty much nailed it...

They moved the boys to a new place, brought in some new and unfunny characters, and the writers pretty much ran out of ideas.

Big Earl and Little Earl...hoo boy, what a mistake.

Yeah, I gotta agree with you there...yeesh! Maybe if the produces had gone back to the show's source material (i.e. the movie "Cooley High") they might've come away with some more usable ideas...

lack of storylines and the cute factor started to fadet happened to the best of them,Dee the sarcastic yet cute younger sister of Raj started to get a little older and less cuter her little OOOOOOOh i'm telling mama started to get old ........that is why they tried to regain that cute factor by bringing little Earl in the picture but it failed ,,,,,,,jut like on Different strokes :

Arnold -out
Sam in didn't work

then on Cosby show
rudy out
olivia in
that never works people are attracted to these shows by the original characters ,,,
it could of lasted longer if they never lost the main basis of the show and stopped bringing all these new people ,,,

Actually, I heard that Fred Barry had rallied some of the cast members into trying to get pay increases. Since the show's ratings had slipped that season, ABC, decided to just cancel the show instead of giving in.

I didn't know that actors could ask for a pay increase when the show is not a HUGE HIT-LOL

Fred Barry tried to get a pay increase on Whats Happening Now but didn't get it which is why he left after season one. I never heard of him doing this with the original series.

The rerun character made Shirley FUNNIER. She would not have been funny around the others. Classic Rerun/Shirley Moment

RERUN:Shirley i want to get in your cookie busines, where do I come in?

Shirley: I don't know, but see the door?,

Reun: Yeah

Shirley: That's where you go out-LOL
