Game Show Network is Remaking Split Second with John Michael Higgins as Host

I just saw an ad for this, it will premiere in April (which likely means America Says is done). I hope they keep the first two or three rounds anyway as fast paced as the Monty Hall version was. The anticlimactic bonus round should be changed, though.

It's great that Split Second is coming back. I remember the original version that was hosted by Tom Kennedy and ran on ABC Daytime from March 1972 to June 1975. It was a fast paced quiz and Kennedy handled the show well as he told contestants to "look at the board." Hopefully, they will keep the original format and go back to the car round where there were five cars on stage and if you picked the right car that started you won the car, plus the money in the jackpot.

If the car didn't start, the champion returned for another day until he/she won the car or was defeated.

Per a press release, will have format similar to the classic (Kennedy) and 1980s (Hall) versions. The only major differences are:

Rounds 1 and 2:

Only the first player to buzz in gets to choose from all three avenues. The second player chooses from what's left, while the last player has to deal with "The Road Not Taken". This occasionally happened on Kennedy/Hall (i. e. with True/False Yes/No A or B questions.), but it's permanant here.

Countdown Round:

4-6-8, according to a GSN press release, except when ties are involved (5-5-6 for a high score tie, 4-6-6 for a low score tie).

First to 0 wins the GSN-mandated top prize of $1,000 (ironically an upgrade for SS) and plays a 60 second "Dash for Cash" for an all-or-nothing $10,000 payoff.


Also, like the kids on the 1970s PBS classic Zoom, contestants here will be identified on a first-name only basis.

The new version of Split Second is highly enjoyable. Keeping the fast pace of Monty Hall's version is good, and the bonus game is a big improvement. I already like this a lot more than America Says. I hope going against Jeopardy! in many markets won't hurt it.

I don't have GSN so I will not be watching but I have been a fan of the show since its inception in the early 70's. The Tom Kennedy version was better than the version Monty Hall did in the 80's, the Kennedy version was faster and had better production values. By the time the 80's version hit the air Monty was already 65 years old and had slowed just a bit, he was a little to folksy for this fast paced show.

I saw the first episode of the latest version which was available on YouTube, Higgins did a solid job. The show also changed up the countdown round, in the original version it was 3-4-5 and the 80's version 4-5-6, the new version 4-6-8, I like the change it seems much fairer to me to have the third place finisher in a much deeper hole. I always like the car finale, although I recognize from a practical standpoint giving away a car once or twice a week might be a little pricy for GSN. The Dash for Cash reminds me of the old lightning round in Password. I hope the show is a hit.
