Default First Names Only

Hey not that I watch much of modern game shows, but I notice that a few of them make a point to introduce contestants by only their first name.

This seems very sad to me. I may wanna know more about them as far as having a story of their lives to tell.

Jeopardy! contestants are intro’d by their full names, and there have to be other shows as well doing that.

What’s the policy on the shows where first-name-only is SOP? Is it a matter of “vulnerability” if the whole name is given? For example, are TPTB afraid of weirdos out there? In the case of J! and others, they don’t seem to worry much about it.

Whim of the Producers, though some full names can be gleaned via cross-referencing appearances on other shows.

I call it "The Sarson Effect" after Christopher Sarson, creater/original XP of PBS's all time-classic kids show Zoom, whose cast members were always identified on a FNO basis for many years after the fact.

Yes I assume they are afraid of "weirdos out there", and I think it's an unfortunate development of the modern era. Now with just a few clicks and a few minutes time you can find out just about anything about anybody on the Internet, which is kind of scary. So yeah I think they're doing it as a way to protect the contestants' privacy. And I don't blame them at all.

A lot of kids' game shows from the past only mentioned the first names of the contestants as well.

I would think preservation the confidentiality of children would be essential, though some old kids’ game shows even mentioned they school they attended.

To branch this out to game shows with adult contestants, it makes me keep my theory that many game shows in the past 15-ish years had contestants were just out of Central Casting. Shows like Jeopardy are the exception.
