These two sitcoms spent six seasons each leading off Wednesday nights on ABC, 19 total combined seasons with news of The Goldbergs ending. I will take The Middle over The Goldbergs any day, saw every episode of The Middle and liked watching it in syndication until Freeform became garbage. I saw the first four seasons of The Goldbergs and the Cheers reunion episode. The Middle had no cast controversy like Jeff Garlin needing to be fired. And hearing about someone as dumb as Barry Goldberg becoming a doctor is a scary thought.

I think the contrast might be the financial situation the characters were in each show.
The Middle was fairly unique since that family was lower middle class. Wouldn't say poor.....but they are probably the poorest family since the Evans on Good Times (although the Evans were much poorer than the Hecks were). Interestingly this show was paired off with "Modern Family" who I called the "1% Family", since two out of the three families were millionaires and the gay son and mate were probably not far behind. The Middle should have been called "Modern Family" since it more paralleled real life for most people. I stopped watching The Goldbergs after a few seasons, but they were faily well off. The father owned a successful furniture store which enabled the wife to stay at home (unless she didnt, I stopped watching it after about three seasons). Lived in a four bedroom (at least) house. |
