After seeing Charlotte Rae in Car 54, Where Are You?, I couldn't help but wonder what it would have been like if she had taken over the role of Gladys Kravitz on Bewitched after Alice Pearce sadly passed away. No disrespect to Sandra Gould, who took over the role starting in season three, when the series went into color. While no one could ever take the place of Alice Pearce (she won an Emmy posthumously for the role), Charlotte Rae's look on Car 54, voice, and facial expressions remind me so much of Alice Pearce. She just seems like she would have played the role more in the way Alice Pearce portrayed Gladys. While Alice Pearce's Gladys was nosy, she was was likable and there was an odd sweetness about her. I think Sandra Gould did a fine job, but it seems like the character became harder/meaner and less likable. It could have been the way the directors had her play it. Below is a clip of Charlotte Rae on Car 54, Where Are you? I would love to hear any thoughts on this.

Never thought of that, but not bad, not bad at all! Loved her on Car 54, where are you?

I always thought Ann Morgan Guilbert would have been good even though she was only in her 30s by 1966. She would have had to play older - and they probably hadn't made a decision whether to continue DVD show by the time Alice had died.

Charlotte Rae was a little too young for the part, a decade younger than Gould who was just about the same age as Alice Pearce. What complicates the situation further is the fact that George Tobias was 66 and looked every minute of it.
