Default Discovery Kids on NBC, starts Sat Oct 5, 2002

Discovery Kids Debuts A Whole World of New Programming on NBC This Fall

From dinosaur feeding frenzies and African wildebeest encounters, to having mental and physical stamina and grueling competitive endurance, Saturday mornings on NBC are about to get exciting for kids this Fall. Beginning Saturday, October 5, Discovery Kids on NBC will make its debut in a new weekly three-hour programming block that dares to entertain kids as it engages their minds. Announced by the two companies last December, the Discovery Kids on NBC partnership will feature six exciting series that showcase the best of real world entertainment and reality-based narrative programming for kids. Discovery Kids on NBC will air weekly from 10 AM-1 PM ET/8AM-11 AM PT.

The Discovery Kids on NBC block will feature an array of programs inspired by Discovery Networks’ homegrown hits as well as original programming from some of the most renowned producers in the kids’ television business. From high energy competitions to innovative natural history to dramatic narrative series, the Discovery Kids on NBC fall 2002 line-up will include:

(* Note: schedule is subject to change)

PREHISTORIC PLANET (10-10:30 AM ET/8-8:30 AM PT)
They were loud. They ate whatever and whenever they wanted. Sometimes they smelled bad and looked worse. No, they weren’t fifth grade boys, they were the dinosaurs and prehistoric beasts that ruled the earth for millions of years. These amazing creatures are set to come back to life on Saturday mornings on Discovery Kids on NBC with PREHISTORIC PLANET, a new series created just for kids that is based on the Discovery Channels’ award winning series WALKING WITH DINOSAURS and its sequel, WALKING WITH PREHISTORIC BEASTS. Originally produced in conjunction with the BBC, this new series will be re-versioned for kids by blending new narration from actor Ben Stiller, graphics and facts with the extraordinary computer animation that made the original documentary one of the most watched cable specials ever. The series follows the stories of dinosaurs and other prehistoric beasts, recreating the sights and sounds of the prehistoric world to shed new light on the fantastic creatures that inhabited it including Tyrannosaurus, Diplodocus, Stegosaurus, as well as new creatures such as Liopleurodon, possibly the largest sea carnivore of its time, and Ornithocheirus, one of the biggest flying creatures ever known. The Discovery Kids on NBC version of PREHISTORIC PLANET is produced in association with Stone House Productions.

CROC FILES (10:30-11 AM ET/8:30-9 AM PT)
He’s been bitten, trampled, chomped, stomped, slimed, hugged, tripped and ripped, all in the name of sharing his love for animals. Who could we be describing but Steve Irwin, the Crocodile Hunter, who has thrilled and amazed viewers around the world during his extreme encounters with crocodiles, snakes, Komodo dragons, kangaroos and virtually anything else that crawls, slithers, bites or flies. Beginning this fall, Steve and his stalwart partner and wife, Terri, will bring their unique brand of fun, information and high velocity adventures to Discovery Kids on NBC with CROC FILES. CROC FILES is produced by The Best Picture Show Company.

TLC’S OPERATION JUNKYARD (11-11:30 AM ET/9-9:30 AM PT)
Most parents think that their kid’s room is a junkyard. Well, the producers of TLC’s hit series, JUNKYARD WARS think that’s a good thing because they are seeking out the next generation of techno-wizards for the all new series TLC’s OPERATION JUNKYARD. Two dynamic hosts, Kamaya J. and Rob Czar, will enliven the competition that pits two teams of four kids against each other in a test of wits, skill, creativity and time. TLC’s OPERATION JUNKYARD gives each team six hours to transform trash into treasure by creating a functional machine such as a catapult, a water bike, and even a pie filling machine. Each team’s contraption is then put to a test with the winning squad advancing to the next round with the dream of making it to the finals. TLC’s OPERATION JUNKYARD is produced by RDF productions, producers of TLC’s Junkyard Wars.

ENDURANCE (11:30 AM-Noon ET/9:30-10 AM PT)
This brand new Discovery Kids on NBC series asks just one simple –-but very tough -- question: Do you have what it takes to endure? From the makers of the hit show Moolah Beach, ENDURANCE tests kids’ knowledge, athleticism, savvy and team skills and asks them to succeed in a world without malls, TV or video games. Twenty kids are brought to an island in the Pacific and challenged in matches of skill, speed, strength and smarts. Every other week, another team will be eliminated after a showdown until one team is crowned champion. Hosted by J.D. Roth, ENDURANCE is produced by Three Ball Productions.

SCOUT’S SAFARI (Working Title) (Noon-12:30 PM ET/10-10:30 AM PT) This real-world fiction series from the renowned Tom Lynch Company (Just Deal, Skate, Caitlin’s Way, and Alex Mack) chronicles a young American girl’s coming of age in an environment that is completely new to her. Born and raised in New York City, Scout is a typical, happy 12-year old girl who can’t wait for the excitement her teenage years would hold. She is suddenly forced to move to a remote area of South Africa where her mother is running a safari lodge. Minus the comforts and conveniences of modern society, Scout comes face-to-face with nature and learns some valuable lessons about what really matters in life. SCOUT’S SAFARI is produced by the Tom Lynch Company in association with Alliance Atlantis.

BLACK HOLE HIGH (12:30-1 PM ET/10:30 -11 AM PT)
A locked bathroom where the tap water runs up to the ceiling. A science teacher who mysteriously disappears. What happens when the natural laws of science you never noticed no longer apply? Welcome to Blake Holsey School (a.k.a. Black Hole High), an unusual private school where scientific mysteries and oddities are the rule. Could there be a connection to the mysterious accident at a neighboring high-tech company that happened in the area years ago? Discovery Kids on NBC invites viewers to join four kids who are secretly investigating these strange events and trying to get to the bottom of things. And, what’s with the spontaneously combusting desks anyway? BLACK HOLE HIGH is produced by Fireworks Entertainment (Real Kids, Real Adventure, Mutant X) in association with noted producer and director Henry Winkler (MacGyver, So Weird).

Since 1993, NBC has successfully targeted youths in the Saturday Morning daypart with award-winning shows such as “Saved By the Bell” and “Hang Time,” as well as its current line-up: “City Guys,” “All About Us,” from Peter Engel Productions in association with NBC Enterprises, and “Just Deal” and “Skate,” from the Tom Lynch Company. The three-hour block of teen-oriented (tNBC) programs assists NBC affiliates in their commitment to meet the guidelines of the FCC’s Children’s Television Act of 1990 by airing a minimum of three hours of FCC-qualifying educational and informational programming for children each week.

Discovery Kids lets kids explore the real world. The Discovery Kids 24-hour digital channel and the upcoming Saturday morning block on NBC will offer entertaining, engaging, high-quality, real-world programming for kids. Building on Discovery Networks signature areas of science, adventure, exploration and natural history as well as a new genre just for kids, real-world narrative, each Discovery Kid’s show gives kids another perspective of the
world in which they live and the possibilities available to them.
