November 22, 1942 - January 27, 2023 Floyd Chester Sneed, 80, original drummer of Three Dog Night, has passed with family by his side on Friday, January 27th, 2023 after battling several health issues. Floyd was born on November 22, 1942 to Willa Sneed (née Carothers) and Napoleon Sneed in Calgary, Alberta, one of the first black families in that province after settling in Amber Valley. In the early 60's, Floyd's sister Maxine bought him a drum set. He was then asked by his brother-in-law, Tommy Chong (later of Cheech and Chong), who was married to Maxine at the time, to join his band Little Daddy and the Bachelors. In '62, Floyd married Sandra "Sandy" Sneed (née Hoiland) and later had two daughters. In '66, He started his own band in CA. In '68 bassist Joe Schermie heard Floyd playing while walking by a nightclub. Schermie thought he heard two drummers so went in to see who "they" were. He found it was solely Floyd Sneed. Joe introduced Floyd to vocalists Danny Hutton, Chuck Negron, and Cory Wells. The vocalists, along with Jimmy Greenspoon, Joe Schermie, Ron Morgan, and Floyd, formed Three Dog Night. TDN earned several platinum and gold records as they toured the world. In '71, their hit song "Joy to the World" launched them into superstardom. By '72 they were on the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine. After years of touring and abundant success, Floyd had a son with Rita Husak in '76. After TDN broke up in '77, Floyd continued to play and tour with other bands. In '90 he took a minor role playing a drummer in Tommy Chong's Far Out Man. In his later years, Floyd enjoyed playing drums for his local church. Throughout his career and up until he passed, Floyd made artwork that was uniquely a style all his own. He also enjoyed cooking which included his mother Willa's fried chicken recipe. Floyd was predeceased by his parents Willa and Napoleon Sneed, his ex-wife Sandra "Sandy" Hoiland (1943–2015), his brother Bernard "Bernie" Sneed (1940–2016), and his daughter Shannon Rozak (née Sneed) (1964–2014). He is survived by his sister Maxine Morrow (née Sneed), daughter Tracy May (née Sneed), his son Zoli Sneed, Zoli's mother Rita Husak, and his grandchildren Kaitlyn Grey (née May), Riley Rozak, and Payton Rozak. Floyd's service will be a private event. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Harmony Project. Donations may be made at harmony-project.org/donate |

My uncle used to listen to Three Dog Night as a teen and I thought their songs were very cool and had neat lyrics. I do remember Randy Newman was the original singer of Mama Told Me Not To Come as well as the writer of the song and it was sampled in the Wild Orchid song Take You Higher from their 1999 album Oxygen. What a surprise that Floyd Sneed passed away because he was a cool drummer and he will be missed

For while in 7th grade, I was into Three Dog Night. Was he the black drummer?
