If you of course, discount Good Morning, Miss Bliss and go straight to the 1989-90 season on NBC's Saturday morning schedule. The first season was about Zack and his sidekick Screech scamming the school, showing up the rival, and winning the girl, with a lot of wacky plots and surreal humor. But as the series continued, did it try too hard to be taken seriously and just turned into a weird tween version of Beverly Hills, 90210?

I like Season 3 (or Season 4, if you were to count GMMB as Season 1) the most. That was when we really got episodes to show their lives out of the school (and the Max). The Malibu Sands arc, in particular, are some of my favorite episodes of the show. There was just more variety overall. For some reason, Season 3 is the only season that did this, since Season 4 had them relegated to just the school and the Max again.

To me, the show only got better as it went on. The only complaint that I have is the disappearing of the guy who ran the Max place. I loved watching him perform his magic.

From what I heard, Ed Alonzo (the guy who played Max, and was a real magician, by the way) quit, because he felt he wasn't getting enough screentime. Which, yeah, if you watch the Season 1 episodes, then you would see he was basically a glorified extra, despite being in the opening credits. |
