She really did. Loved the crazy. She was married twice.
Jack Cassidy. This guy was nuts. Jack was a great actor but he suffered from alcoholism and bipolar disorder. He once watered his yard in the middle of the day completely naked for everyone to see. Also once, Shirley witnessed Jack sitting in the corner of their house reading a book naked and they apparently had a show to do that night, and Jack looked up at her and said "I know now that I'm Christ." Eventually in 1976 Cassidy burned himself to death passed out drunk dropping a cigarette in his couch which caught fire, killing him. His body was so cremated, the coroner had to identify him usuing dental records. Jack was also jealous of his son's Shaun success as a teen idol and performer. I dont think if Jack went in front of thousands of screaming girls naked and drunk, would have been a positive result. The second mentally ill idiot Marty Ingels (Ingerman). Marty was less outwardly insane than Jack but seemingly enjoyed suing anyone for any slight. Jones said of his death "He often drove me crazy (because baby, you love the crazy), but there is not a day I wont miss him and love him to my core." Marty was less outwardly crazy than Jack, but find some videos of the guy. He was an apple bag short of a load. There are videos of this man, especially later in life, and he was cookoo as hell. Would love to have sit at a table with Jack and Marty having drinks. It would have been fascinating. I would have laughed my ass off but came away thinking, "I dont want to be with these two together ever again with me there." I will say, thank you Shirley if you read these boards. You were a gorgeous woman, who loved strange people. Someone has to I guess. I can see you as a young woman coming home to your mother after a date and going "He is nice, but just too normal for my taste." |

I wish that Marty Ingels had been on Dick van Dyke Show more often.
