Nate was still sitting in Anchorside, the guy he was talking to left about 10 minutes before,
and he just felt like going back to his place and sleeping.

A tall woman, with blond hair, wearing a white button up shirt and black slacks walked in.
She stood behind Nate, put one hand on his shoulder, and ordered a beer. He turned to see
who it was, though he’d know that voice anywhere. She gave him a smile and sat down next
to him, where the guy had been sitting.
“I thought...you and Brian...romantic vacation?” He was confused and she just started to
laugh.
“I realized that Brian may or may not be willing to give his life for me, but, you...I’ve
witnessed it. I don’t know why it took me so long to realize what I feel about you. And I’m
sorry I’ve blown you off before. But today, I’ve realized that maybe I should give ‘us’ a
chance. Maybe I should see if this would work out.” She paused, “I don’t think I’ve ever
been as scared as I was today in that temple, and without you, chances are I wouldn’t have
made it out.”
“Well then, if you want to start something, let’s head over to my place, we can talk for a
while, have something to drink, you know. I think we both need to talk after all that’s
happened today.”

CD nodded in agreement. Both paid the amount for what they had been drinking and they
each got into their separate cars. CD followed Nate to his house and walked up do the door
where he was standing. Nate let them both in and told CD to take a seat on the couch, “What
do you want to drink?”
“Just soda or something.” CD replied.

Nate walked over to her with to Cokes in hand. He handed her one and he sat down on the
couch next to her. There was a long, awkward period of silence before either person spoke,
and eventually, Nate talked, “Remember when we were on the case of the lady who died
who wrote the advice column*?”
“Yeah,” She replied hesitantly, “What about it?”
“You gave me an article. It was a letter she had answered about a kid that had something
happen to them at camp. They wouldn’t tell anyone. I asked you if something happened to
you, and you replied, ‘Not at camp.’ What happened?”

He waited for her to answer, and when she attempted to speak, she couldn’t, and all she
could do was cry. Nate pulled her into a warm embrace and rubbed her back. He knew it
would be a touchy subject, but he wanted to know, and he wanted to help her any way he
could.
*I don’t remember her name...so I’m leaving it at that.

Nate knew he shouldn’t have asked, but any relationship doesn’t work out if you don’t trust
the person. CD burried her head in his chest and continued crying. Eventually, the heavy
sobs turned into slight whimpers, slowly coming to a stop. She looked up, her eyes red and
puffy.
“CD, I’m sorry I asked,” Nate started.
CD cut him off, “No, don’t be. I need to tell you about this, I should have told you a long
time ago...”
Nate nodded, encouraging her to tell him the whole story, “When...When I was ten, my
parents got a divorce, five years later, my mom started dating this guy, Ricky, who she
really, really liked. She was always so happy around him, always smiling and cheerful. I
hadn’t seen her like that in so long. I wanted it to stay that way. Ricky was a nice guy, and
since I wanted him to stick around, I was always attempting to impress him, in any way I
could. I dressed nice, I always picked up my room...the stuff that always impresses parents.”

She stopped, Nate new that wasn’t all, so he waited for more information. He wasn’t about
to push her into telling him, the fact that she’d willingly made it thus far was amazing.

“Late one night, after he and my mom got home from a date, he came up to my room. He
kept telling me he had to punish me for being a bad girl and that I had brought what was
happening on,” she blinked back tears, and attempted to go on, “He threw me on the bed and
took off my clothes, the blue PJs with stars all over them, I attempted to scream, I told him
no, but he put a pillow over my face and muffled the screams so no one could hear. I
eventually just laid back on my bed and sobbed. He had raped me, and I’d never gotten up
the nerve to tell.”

The tears rolled once again, and CD fell into the strong embrace of Nate Basso. He held her
like you’d hold a child who was scared of a thunderstorm. He finally realized why CD
sometimes had problems working rape cases, now he understood a lot. They’d definately
take it slow. He’d make her as comfortable as he could. He wouldn’t let anything happen to
her, and he’d swear to her that he’d never leave.

They stayed like that most of the night. Nate didn’t mind it one bit. He loved having her
close to him, but what he liked most was that she trusted him, and he could help her now. He
could always be there for her, and assure her that things would be all right.

She has had surgery, but they can't get it all w/out destroying her brain. With radiation and chemo, they know they can't get it all.
