Dune? The same as the 1980's film with Sting?

I have tried for decades once in a while to watch and make it through that film. The sets, costumes, the designs of the sets, the special effects are really, really cool.

But the movie absolutely and completely made no sense whatsoever. None. I have tried to watch that movie straight, high and drinking, and it comes out the same, the plot and the story is a scramble of huh?

Most critics thought the same thing. It looks cool, but the story makes absolutely and completely no sense whatsoever.
