Movie Horror Film "Smile" Holds #1 Spot for 2nd Weekend

Smile Over-Performs with $22 Million, Bros Flops

Paramount’s cleverly promoted horror film Smile may be full of terror and trauma, but it is the sole bright spot in the box office this weekend, opening to $22 million and coming in first place by a huge margin.

The $17 million budgeted scarefest nabbed the best opening since Bullet Train nearly two months ago, beating out bigger budget and more hyped titles such as The Woman King and Don't Worry Darling.




This is all from a film that was once planned to go straight to Paramount+, only changing direction and ultimately getting a 3,645 theater launch after a strong response from test audiences.

Time will tell if it has the legs that The Black Phone had (grossing $89.9 million from a $23.6 million opening) and Barbarian is having (opening to $10.5 million and now at $33.1 million after four weekends, and that’s off a budget of just $4 million), but this is a great opening even if it it plays like a more typically frontloaded horror film from here.




The better than expected hold following its $8.2 million Friday-plus-previews gross bodes well for its long term potential, as do the pretty good reviews (75% on Rotten Tomatoes) and the not bad for a horror film B- CinemaScore.

Internationally the film grossed an additional $14.5 million for a global cume of $36.5 million.







Unfortunately, the rest of the box office has little to celebrate. The $63.4 million overall weekend box office is the best since August 19-21, but it is still the sixth weekend in a row to have the distinction of being worse than any pre-pandemic weekend in over two decades.

One pretty good opening each weekend is not enough to sustain the box office, and the blockbusters can’t come soon enough, though a stronger turnout on smaller films, especially from adult audiences, would also be necessary for the numbers to return to pre-pandemic levels.







Last week’s champ Don’t Worry Darling came in second place, following up its respectable $19.4 million opening with a lackluster $7.3 million weekend two.

The film was expected to be frontloaded, with its opening being driven by Harry Styles fans, but the weekend two drop of 62% and the domestic cume of $32.8 million is still underwhelming here.

The $35 million budgeted thriller is holding better abroad, down 40% in holdover markets and bringing the global total to $54.7 million.







The Woman King took third place with $7 million, down just 36% in its third weekend and bringing its cume to $46.7 million.

As expected, the killer word of mouth is leading to strong holds, though it still has a long road to make back its $50 million budget. The international footprint has been limited so far, bringing in just $3.4 million, but it ramps up its piecemeal expansion next weekend with Germany and U.K.







The biggest disappointment this weekend came from Universal’s Judd Apatow-produced Bros.

The film had a lot going for it, being touted as the first major studio LGBTQ rom-com and winning over both critics (91% on Rotten Tomatoes) and audiences (A CinemaScore) alike.




Unfortunately, hardly anyone showed up, with the Billy Eichner-starring film grossing just $4.8 million from 3,350 screens. This is a worse debut than the summer’s sole studio live action comedy Easter Sunday, which had a $5.4 million opening and went on to gross just $13 million.

Bros could do better when it’s all said and done with good word of mouth, but it's a dismal opening not just for the $22 million film but for the comedy genre as a whole, which is beginning to look like an endangered species.







Fifth place went to the re-release of Avatar, which grossed $4.7 million this weekend, down 55% from the last frame. This is a good hold for a re-release, and the post second weekend cume is $19 million domestically and $58 million internationally.

The highest grossing movie of all time worldwide may not need more money, but the interest here is a great sign for this December’s release of Avatar: The Way of Water, the 13 years in the waiting sequel.







The biggest per-theater average ($8k) in the top ten came from the Indian historical epic Ponniyin Selvan: I, grossing $4 million from 500 theaters via Sarigama for a sixth place finish.

The Tamil language film is the first of a two-parter, with the second half expected to come out next year.

Smile has Year's Best 2nd Weekend Hold as it Falls Just Under 22%, Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile Bites Off a Meager $11.5M, Amsterdam Flops with $6.5M Start

It was another lousy weekend with a total box office of just $57 million, the 11th in a row under $100 million and the seventh in a row under $65 million. There hasn’t been a stretch this bad since before the summer of 2021, but thankfully reinforcements are on the way.

The next two weekends will see the releases of Halloween Ends and Black Adam, which will bring us to an era where these truly dire weekend grosses are exceptions rather than the norm.

As bad as the overall box office climate has been, there have still been glittery high points that show us that audiences are eager to show up if the content is there.







The best example of that in the past two weeks is Smile, which opened to a solid $22.6 million last weekend and followed it up with a phenomenal $17.6 million, winning the weekend again as it dropped just 22%.

This is the year’s best second weekend hold and it is among the best ever for a horror film. With a cume of $49.9 million, Smile is running ahead of the year’s highest grossing horror movie The Black Phone, which had $47.4 million after ten days and went on to gross $89.9 million.



Overseas the holds are even better, with holdover markets actually going up by 20% this weekend. The global cume is now $89.9 million off a $17 million budget.

Remember that Smile was very nearly a Paramount+ title, only getting the go ahead for a theatrical release after a strong response from test screenings. This decision turned out to be a great one for Paramount and for cinemas as it is in the process of becoming the biggest hit of the dry spell.







Unfortunately, there’s not much else at the box office to feel good about this weekend, with the newcomers having especially disappointing showings.

Despite being the only family film since July, audiences simply weren’t biting for Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile which debuted in second place with $11.5 million from 4,350 theaters. Sony’s $50 million crocodile musical has the hot songwriting team Pasek and Paul providing the tunes and Shawn Mendes providing the singing voice for the CG reptile.




It’s an underwhelming start, but it could still hold well and it will remain the go-to kid-friendly film until Thanksgiving.

Though it opened smaller than last year’s Clifford the Big Red Dog (which had a $16.6 million opening), it could see a similar finish, and that film got to $48.9 million domestically and $107 million worldwide. That wouldn’t be great given the budget, but it wouldn’t be a disaster either.







For a bonafide disaster, look to this weekend’s third-placer Amsterdam. The $80 million budgeted period piece from writer/director David O. Russell will go down as one of the year’s biggest flops as it opened to a mere $6.5 million from 3,005 theaters including IMAX and other premium large format screens.

Despite the star power (Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, and John David Washington are in the lead roles and the large supporting cast includes Chris Rock, Taylor Swift, Rami Malek, and Robert De Niro, to name just a few) and the lavish production values, the offbeat film was always going to be a tough sell, and it’s the sort that would have been driven a lot by killer reviews and awards buzz.




Unfortunately, critics had little love for the film, with only 33% of critics rating it positively on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences didn’t hate it (B CinemaScore), but it would still take a miracle to get anywhere near breaking even.

Whatever hope there may have been for the international numbers to save it has turned out to be false, and in roughly half of its international footprint it opened to just $3.5 million.







Fourth place went to The Woman King, which continues its strong holds, down just 22% in its fourth weekend with $5.3 million.

The cume is now $54.1 million. It is going more slowly abroad, with $10 million from 34 markets so far, but the holds are also great for the potential Oscar contender in its limited number of holdover territories where it dropped 21% this weekend.

It’s still not clear how much it will catch on outside the U.S., but even with a domestic heavy finish it looks likely to double the $50 million budget and make it into the nine digit returns.







Don't Worry Darling completes the top five with $3.48 million, which is down 49% from last weekend. The domestic cume after three weeks is $38.5 million.

The numbers aren’t great, especially after the solid $19.4 million opening, but with a global cume of $69.3 million, it has now roughly doubled its $35 million budget.







This weekend also saw the year’s second best per theater average with Tár, which marks director Todd Field’s return to cinema after over 15 years.

The Cate Blanchett-starrer opened to $160k from four locations (that’s $40k per theater) spread between New York and Los Angeles, and Focus will bring it to 30 new locations next weekend and continue expanding it in the weeks that follow as it hopefully rides a wave of exceptional critical praise (97%), word of mouth, and awards buzz.

The other strong per theater average this weekend came from Triangle of Sadness, which grossed $210k from 10 theaters for an average of $21k. The Palme d'Or winning film is the first English-language feature from director Ruben Östlund.
