James (John Amos) is really an excellent actor with full of emotions and reactions, and it showed its intensity in the episode "Love In The Ghetto".
James and Florida hit the roof when hearing about Thelma's engagement to Larry. As James, Florida and Thelma arguing about the engagement, JJ come to defense of Thelma. James told JJ to keep his mouth shut as this matter doesn't concern him. But JJ told James he will not keep his mouth shut. In that scene with emotions were running high, James gave JJ another warning to keep his mouth shut, but JJ did not budge and said no to James. James got really mad and made a move to hit JJ, but Florida stepped in and held James back. I was wondering if Florida hadn't stepped in, was James really going to hit JJ?

He might have, but I think James had a soft spot. He probably would have made a move to hit JJ, but stop short of a physical altercation. Remember James was going to break Mad Dog's trigger finger for shooting JJ, but his soft spot got better of him and nstead he felt sorry for Mad Dog.
