Wouldn't the show have been very popular at the time? Was there something that said outside shows and world events could not have been mentioned?
Annette would have been very popular and I think the boys would have had some googly eyes for her. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2f01-Oy0C6E |

It's odd; they mentioned other shows--Men of Annapolis, McHale's Navy, Ben Casey.

Probably my favorite line of the whole series.
S6 E22 "Beaver on TV" Ward brought a TV into the office. Fred of course put in his 2˘. Oh, uh, what's Beaver going to do on television? Is he going to be on The Mickey Mouse Club? Oh, no, he's going to be a panelist on the Teen Age Forum |

Re world events, one time Wally was listening to his transistor radio--getting the news and saying that's how Lumpy found out about Cuba.
The reference was to a crisis in late 1962 when the U. S. found out the Soviet Union was shipping missiles to Cuba. Due to proximity, these could strike the U. S. The President ordered a Naval blockade, and the Soviets backed off. |

In the episode where Beaver had two dates for the Eighth Grade Dance, Eddie said to him "What's the matter Junior? You get drummed out of the Mouseketeers?" To me, that was a very funny Eddie line.

LITB ran on ABC when virtually all of these references were made (it was on CBS for its first season). Ben Casey, Mickey Mouse Club (original 50s show), McHale's Navy, 77 Sunset Strip, and Surfside 6 also ran on ABC. Capt. Kangaroo and The Twilight Zone were CBS shows, and Men of Annapolis was a ZIV syndicated show. Another veiled reference was made to CBS's What's My Line?, with a Wally comment about panelist Bennett Cerf's crying (probably on the episode where Beaver was on a TV panel show).
Seems like the bulk of references were to ABC shows. The Mickey Mouse Club, at the times of its references on LITB (season 6), was in syndicated reruns. |

I never noticed any of the shows being mentioned. It seem to me that Mayfield was in a bubble and nothing from the outside world got in. |

You have to think some honcho, whether with the show or the network, told the writers to do them. A really early one is the Men of Annapolis reference from Wally's Track Meet from season 4. |

There was a scene, I'm thinking it was in the episode where Wally didn't tell Ward and June Scott's parents wouldn't be at the cabin, where Lumpy drives into the Cleaver driveway--he tells Wally he was in his room watching Captain Kangaroo and daddy came in and started yelling at him.
Wally tells Lumpy, maybe he doesn't want you watching Capt. Kangaroo. |
