Default MetaUniverse - Are you ready?

Metaverse? Definition: The term Metaverse is used to describe a combination of the virtual reality and mixed reality worlds accessed through a browser or headset, which allows people to have real time interactions and experiences across distance. For instance, Fortune 500 companies, wanting to get in on the ground floor, have already set up stores and businesses. Your avatar can shop for virtual clothes, can shop for food, buy real estate, live in what you buy, and store your wardrobe, food, and other goods, in your real estate. Even churches are springing up for services, communion and baptisms. Your avatar can go on dates, to concerts, restaurants, sporting events, etc. Hug or kiss. Get married. Have a virtual family. In other words, you can continue the life you already have or you can create a life you have always fantasized about. At this time some things are free, some things cost a small amount of real dollars, other things cost thousands of real dollars, ie real estate. Some celebs have already bought mansions and are performing there. Facebook has already changed it's name to the "Meta". It's expected millions will "live" there in one form or another. Anybody have any thoughts on this? Do you see yourself living in the Meta?

LOL, Sounds like an easy way for me to lose 50 lbs and 30 years, gain undeserved confidence, and live in a fantasy world. ohh boy!!

But what about people claiming to be victims of "virtual harassment"? Do they expect to be awarded virtual settlements, or will they expect to broach my real bank account? I see a potential bonanza for "Cosby victim" copycat scams....

The concept is undeniably fascinating, but equally worrying. Beyond the risk of becoming addicted to a virtual reality fueled by fantasy, there's also the concern that a centralized authority (Facebook) will presumably influence not only how you live your "life", but literally everything you see, hear, and experience in that reality.

I'm not against trying this if I ever get the equipment, but I also value touching grass now and again.

I agree the possibilities for theft, cyber-harassment and everything else that's negative, will certainly carryover. Safeguards will definitely have to be put in place. But for the elderly, handicapped, and bedridden individuals is this a viable option to have the life, they have always wanted? Go dancing, surf, ski, or just date. I think there's a thread on this board, of people who have given up on ever having a spouse, or children or a home. Dare say is this now a option for them? ...... a possibility? Any thoughts?

Sounds like one giant Sims game. Why play it?

What about the people who insist when their radio is tuned between stations, they can hear the voice of God? I'm a little conflicted if such people should be give equal stature in the virtual world.

Steven Spielberg did a film, based on the novel Ready Player One, that is about an all-virtual society.
