I think that Green Acres is probably the most surreal sitcom ever made.
I think that Newhart comes close especially the final season. What others come close or are more surreal? |

Married... with Children with its cartoonish situations was definetely surreal.
And its "copycat" Unhappily Ever After, just for Mr. Floppy. For its fantasy pretence I'd add also Sabrina the Teenage Witch. |

Once you got past season 2 of Newhart and the guy who played Kirk left, they must have decided that all added characters were to be looney tunes.
Kirk was halfway reasonable, Leslie was totally there, as were Dick and Joanna--the rest were certifiable or close to it. |

With Larry, Darryl and Darryl plus Stephanie and Michael the show morphed into a more weird situational show. That allowed Dick and the deadpan humor to shine since he saw all of it as unbelievable. But that last season was really surreal. I mean Stephanie and Michael's baby owning the TV Station, George's board game being almost a cultlike happening, and of course Dick waking up only to actually be Bob and trying to explain to Emily what a weird dream he just had. Those things rank right up there with many of the Green Acres situations. Remember the square egg and Arnold being in love with a dog or him giving up a movie part to a horse so the horse's child can go to college? |
