July 26: Happy Birthday Sandra Bullock

Sandra Bullock is turning 58. Bullock, the daughter of an American father and a German mother, spent much of her childhood in Germany and Austria, and is fluent in German (a talent she displayed onscreen in Ocean’s 8). She studied drama at East Carolina University, and then took classes from acting teacher Sandy Meisner.

Bullock began making television and film appearances in the late eighties. In the early 1990s, she had lead or major supporting roles in films such as Love Potion No. 9, The Thing Called Love, and Demolition Man. Her breakthrough came when she starred with Keanu Reeves in a very kinetic action thriller.

Bullock cemented her star status a year later, starring in two financial successes, the rom-com While You Were Sleeping and the Hitchcockian thriller The Net. The former brought her a Golden Globe nomination, the first of five in her career, for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy.

Bullock has remained a major star for the last 25 years. A high point for her was her near-sweep of the major Best Actress honors for 2009–missing only the BAFTA Award–as Leigh Anne Tuohy in The Blind Side. A few of her other major successes have included Miss Congeniality, 2004 Best Picture winner Crash, The Proposal, The Heat, and Gravity. She has had some flops (Speed 2, Miss Congeniality 2), and taken sabbaticals from the industry from time to time, but in the long run her career has been pretty nearly unsinkable.

Most recently, in 2018 Bullock starred in the heist film Ocean’s 8 and the post-apocalyptic thriller/horror film Bird Box.

Earlier this year, she starred in the action comedy The Lost City. Bullock will appear in Bullet Train, which comes out next month. She is also, as some will recall, a two-time headliner.
