Besides MASH, has there ever been a successful sitcom based on a film? The Klugman/ Randall Odd Couple is another success (I just thought of). But the successes of making a film into a TV show rarely works.

Clueless. A massive hit film in 1995, a TV series based on the film debuted in 1996 was cancelled by ABC after 1 season and ran on UPN network for 2 more seasons.
Unfortunately it was considered by all to be a creative failure, stemming at least in-part due to Alicia Silverstone, the star of the movie not agreeing to appear on the TV show. Her recast Rachel Blanchard was just not as good an actress. Also in order to bring it to TV, the tone of the series was adjusted and was not the same as the movie. The movie was witty, wry and at times irreverent, and the TV series was sappy, poorly constructed and stupid. |

There was a show in the early 70's that didn't last long called Anna and the King, based on the Broadway musical hit The King and I.
The Courtship of Eddie's father TV show was based on a movie with the same name from 1963 starring Glenn Ford and Shirley Jones. In this case though the show was a hit that lasted from 1969 to 1972! |

The African Queen was a very short lived 76 series that only lasted a few episodes and then there was Blue Thunder that only lasted one season.
