I just watched the TV movie again for the first time in a while and noticed, Jeannie uses her HANDS to do magic, more like Samantha... Of course she blinks too sometimes but not always. In the original TV show I don't recall her ever doing magic without blinking. I wonder why they waited until the movie to expanded her abilities? lol

There were times where she used her powers without blinking. In the first season, she sometimes turned into smoke without blinking. There were two examples of that in the pilot: after the phonecall from Tony's superiors, and when she 'jumped' into her bottle. She also levitated herself and Tony without blinking. There were other times in the first and second seasons where she disappeared in a hurry and didn't blink to do that.
There were quite a few instances in the first season where she turned into smoke by just tossing her head up and back. That was shown for the first time in the pilot after Tony "set her free" on the beach. She would sometimes wave her hand or motion with a finger to move items or people, such as moving the turkey over to the counter in "Tony's Wife" or when she waved the floating picnic baskets to the floor in "My Master, the Rainmaker". What times in the movie did she use her powers without blinking? I only remember when she both blinked at the TV to shut it off and turned her hand as if turning it off from a distance. But I interpreted that to mean that using a hand was simply an extra means of using finer control over something when blinking. The writing quality of both movies have never gotten me to go back to them often at all, so I don't remember anything specific about her using magic without blinking it. |

I would guess that with Bill Asher directing (the first one) he had no real knowledge of the old series so incorporated hand movements as he did on Bewitched. Both these movies are just bad enough to write them off as alternative Universe stories. One where Jeannie married Trapper John instead of JR Ewing.
