Question George's condoms

In the "sponge worthy" episode, George mentions a problem where he can't get condom wrappers open in time, so therefore he doesn't use them....maybe I'm naive, but can't he just open them ahead of time? And even if he can't open them in time, why can't he just become aroused again and then use them? Why was he all like "it's too late" as if it were the end of the world?

Also, how come Elaine and the others aren't even curious as to WHY the sponge was taken off the market? They're not even scared for their safety...what if something was defective about the sponge?

And besides, in the "Virgin" episode, Elaine mentions her diaphragm....I thought she only used sponges?

Yeah thats exactly what i was always thinking when he said he couldnt get the open in time, why didnt he just open them before. And theres always some inconsistencies in shows like her saying she has a diaphram then only using sponges. In one episode newman says he hates fruit then in a later episode he loves fruit.

If you've watched enough Seinfeld episodes, you quickly realize, that this is not really a mistake. It's just a minor detail that is left out in order to make the punchline work better. If they brought up the fact that he should just open them up before hand, then they wouldn't have been able to continue with the joke. The joke would've been over at the beginning of the episode, and the show would've been over 15 minutes early. This is very common on MOST sitcoms.

Yes you have a point. In most shows there are situations that would never happen in real life but they happen in the show in order to make for a funny episode.

For instance, in tonight's episode on the Subway, why doesn't Kramer find a policeman when that thug is chasing him or appeal to the rest of the people in the subway for help? The reason is that it's a lot more funny to see him stumbling all over himself through the train.

There are definitely continuity defects in Seinfeld like you already mentioned (how 'bout K-Man on underwear-"I'm out there & lovin' it Jerry" & "My boys need a home"),
but I don't see the condom thing as an oversight, an error or continuity descrepency. It fits perfect with George's character. With COstanza's lack of confidence issues it takes perfect timing for all his love making efforts to come together...remember, George has had full equipment failure on the spot before. For our schlep-friend George, if he has to fobble with a condem wrapper at the moment, he's done for the day, prob couldn't bring his lil' soldier back to battle for a while.

Of course, your suggestions about opening ahead of time would solve it, but hey, then the joke goes.

Actually, what the writers SHOULD have done is to have Jerry ask George that very question..."Hey George, why not just open the package ahead of time...then there's no problem with getting the condom out".

Then George could pause for a few seconds, with a dumb look on his face, processing Jerry's suggestion, then his face lights up as he runs out of the room, announcing "I'm back, baby!!" as he rushes back to Susan's place. <audience roars and applauds>

Actually, that scene would also work with Kramer or Elaine giving George the suggestion...I think we might be on to something here...
