Default Gary Coleman instead of Penny

In the 6th season episode of "Florida Gets a Job", Gary Coleman make a guess star appearance and he steal the show. I was wondering in season 5, instead of Penny they cast Gary Coleman as Willona's adapted child. With Gary's humor and rapid-fire sarcasm, it would have put more energy into the show.

But Gary might have been too good for Goodtimes since he probably would have overshadowed JJ as the star of show.

Nah. He was okay, but I definitely wouldn’t want to see him in almost every episode. Besides, by Season 6, he probably would have been making passes at Thelma if he was a regular.

Gary did made a pass at Penny by saying he wants to play doctor. But Willona told him nobody play doctor with Penny unless he had four year medical school, and an MD plate on his Cadillac

It would have been interesting. Gary Coleman was a dynamo at that age!

He would have been better than Janet Jackson. Or they could have fired Janet Dubios

Penny (Janet Jackson) was not a good actress. Gary Coleman was excellent.

Gary Coleman was great in that episode. Stole every scene he was in.

I didn't care for the Penny character.

I think Penny character might have been more likable if (as Wawwi mentioned) she was a better actress. Probably the only reason she got role was because she was Jackson 5's sister. Or her pushy father trying to get her into show businees.

If they fired Willona, then the only "adult" character left on that show would have been Bookman

She didn't get the Penny role because of her Jackson Family privileges. She was actually turned down for the Penny role, and she CRIED when she was turned down. She got it because she could cry on cue.
