I Love Lucy Episode Synopsis (w/images):
“Lucy Hires An English Tutor” & “Ricky Has Labor Pains”: “Lucy Hires An English Tutor”: Episode #47 (Syndicated episode #48) VHS: On some tapes, it is attached to “Lucy Is Enceinte (Pregnant)” & “Lucy Goes To The Hospital.” DVD: On the Season 2 box set, it is attached to episodes #43-48 along with the bonus feature My Favorite Husband episode “Mrs. Cooper Thinks Liz Is Pregnant” along with “Behind The Scenes Featurette: Excerpts from “Laughs, Luck…and Lucy” by Jess Oppenheimer with video from “Lucy’s Showbiz Swan Song” & “Lucy In Enceinte (Pregnant).” On the blu ray set, it is attached to along with bonus features like flubs and the same My Favorite Husband episode. Air Date: Mon. 12/29/52 Note: When I was in high school in the late 90s, I knew two high school teenagers that got on EVERYONES nerves by calling them “gay.” If this English tutor in real life existed in my school, I can totally see them making fun of him. Also, I can only picture what it would be like if the English tutor performed at Ricky’s club. He would look SO out of place. Also, back in the 50s, this episode not only almost didn’t air due to the then-controversial nature (how times have changed), people were convinced it was the end of the show. Desi brought in three religious people who looked at the script and approved of it so CBS decided to air it but they didn’t want the word “pregnant” mentioned, so they used the word Enceinte which is French for pregnant somehow thinking no one would notice. Also I can definitely say that I remember when the baby episodes aired on Nick (and later TV Land), they showed “Lucy is Enceinte” BEFORE the five flashback episodes. However local syndication like WNYW did the opposite however the first scenes in those flashback episodes were edited out. |

Ricky Has Labor Pains”:
Episode #48 (Syndicated episode #49) DVD: On the Season 2 box set, it is attached to episodes #49-54 as well as the My Favorite Husband episode “Liz Becomes A Sculpturess” along with Behind The Scenes Featurette: Except from Laughs, Luck…and Lucy by Jess Oppenheimer. On the blu ray set, it is attached to along with bonus features like flubs. Air Date: Mon. 1/5/53 Notes: For MANY years, until the blu ray release in the 2010s, the episode was NEVER shown fully uncut. The syndicated version showed like two seconds of footage that the home video releases didn’t show but the latter had more footage. Here’s the information: https://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards...ighlight=Labor Also, back in the 50s, this episode not only almost didn’t air due to the then-controversial nature (how times have changed), people were convinced it was the end of the show. Desi brought in three religious people who looked at the script and approved of it so CBS decided to air it but they didn’t want the word “pregnant” mentioned, so they used the word Enceinte which is French for pregnant somehow thinking no one would notice. Also, the final scene is shown on the I Love Lucy Christmas Special. Originally, when the special was colorized, this and other flashback scenes weren’t until 2015 when it was colorized. Also I can definitely say that I remember when the baby episodes aired on Nick (and later TV Land), they showed “Lucy is Enceinte” BEFORE the five flashback episodes. However local syndication like WNYW did the opposite however the first scenes in those flashback episodes were edited out. |
