In one of the silly storylines, Granny is pro-South to the point where she thinks there is a war between the states. She even had a Grey uniform and a sword.
In actuality, the hill people were pro union. These people were poor and didn’t have slaves. Tennessee almost didn’t join the Confederacy and East Tennessee was strongly against it, and this even shows in elections now that the eastern part of the state will vote Republican. The hill people had no vested interest in leaving the United States and those states who did succeed was because of rich landowners. West Virginia became a state and this took some “string pulling” to accomplish this because of the constitutional requirement to do so which is stringent. Virginia were rich landowners, WV was hill folk with almost no slaves and didn’t want to fight a rich man’s war. I know it is a show but granny being a Rebel doesnt compute. Granny of the civil war era would have Lincoln on her wall and shot rebels. |

The OP has a point, but I figured Granny was for the Confederacy simply because they lived in the South (presumably)
I doubt that we would see that joke told today. Or the stuff about the Confederacy either, come to think about it. |

I think it could be that Granny was not aware of how the REAL Confederacy worked back when it was around.... Like me, I proudly call myself a DEMOCRAT, even though originally the Democratic party was the party of the KKK and racism.... I think maybe Granny was just basing the "South" on what it was at the current time of her life |

Yeah, Granny said the North wanted to keep slaves, but the South defeated them and put an end to it. Jethro tried to correct her on this, a rare occasion where he actually knew what he was talking about, but Granny would have none of it. Who's going to argue with Granny?
