The beautiful teacher Miss Cummings on Family Affair, Joan Vohs (1927-2001) has been gone for a full 20 years now. She was quite glamorous in her 1950s appearances especially. There was clearly definite sexuality in her earlier work, including The Millionaire, while more conservative clothes on FA and My Three Sons later gave her a more dowdy, toned down look appropriate for the roles.
Here are some photos of Joan that I find especially appealing. In the first one, a lovely smile, very nice: The next one has been dated as 1957 and may help us date the one above, judging by Joan's longer hair of the late '50s: Now we come to a great look, so beautiful: A fun look at Joan's nice figure, one of many modelling photos: Here we see that Joan had quite a short hairstyle at times (early 1950s). Even in small photos, her lovely eyes are very evident: I think it's noteworthy that Joan kept her hair relatively long in the 1960s; here she is with her hair partially pulled back on FA, held with a barrette (2 photos): By the time she takes on a regular My Three Sons role in 1967 as neighbor Jan Dearing, we'll see her exclusively with updos. |

Here's how Joan looked in her 1955 Reader's Digest episode, which starred Richard Denning. So glamorous with her dangling earrings:
I'm a decidedly 'long hair guy' when it comes to women's styles, but there are always many exceptions -- and Joan looks so fantastic with her shorter hair. Such a pretty woman, very hot in this episode: |
