Default Ricky Ricardo and the 1950's Male

Lucy makes a splash in Hollywood in that routine with the dummy. She's such a hit that she's offered a contract. And what does Ricky do? Does he support her ambitions and accomplishments in any way? No. Instead, he puts her on a guilt trip until she finally gives up her own dreams while he continues to seek his own. How selfish! What a self-centered pig!

I turn on Password. Allen Ludden turns to the male contestant and asks what he does for a living. Then he turns to the female contestant and asks what HER HUSBAND does for a living! Barf! When another female contestant comes on who actually does have a career, he asks her what she does. She says she's a speech therapist. His response: And you're a very pretty speech therapist. GAG! Why doesn't he tell the male contestants they are a very handsome whatever when they tell him their jobs. Why must a woman be reduced to nothing but a sexual thing regardless of her accomplishments.

I turn on Father Knows Best. The title of that show alone makes me nauseous. But in this particular episode, Bud is going to be a judge for the week because it's "Boy's Week" in Springfield. Boy's Week is an opportunity for the teenage boys in town to see what it's like to have grown up, professional jobs. Betty is every bit as smart as Bud. Smarter actually. Why can't she participate? Why can't this be Youth Week instead of Boy's Week? And why can't mother know best every once in a while?

On To Tell the Truth, the regular host, Bud Collyer, goes on vacation. So the pull one of the regular panelists to take his place while he's gone. Who do the select? Ralph Bellamy, a man of course! Why not Kitty Carlisle? This is an extremely bright woman with a degree from the London School of Economics. She presents herself well, she's articulate. She certainly could have done as good a job as Ralph Bellamy if not better. She was probably better educated too.

I'll tell you, if I were living in the Fifties, I'd be wanting to wring the neck of about every man I saw. The disrespect and repression of women, who had virtually no rights and nothing to strive for, was beyond horrible.

I always noticed that too. What, she has no life outside her husband?

Ricky would never let Lucy be in the show, but as has been pointed out before, the real irony is that she WAS the show!

You got some really good points and interesting things there.

I guess it was the 50's and that's the way thing were back in those days. Thank God I wasn't around back then I would have killed myself if I was a woman in those days. Being treated like I was a peice a property of my husband's.

How interesting that you put it that way. Did you know that the reason behind women taking their husband's last name when they got married was that it signified transfer of ownership from their father to their husband? It's basically the same thing that happened to slaves when they were sold, they would assume their new owner's last name.
