Default Did Mr. French lose weight?
I am at the end of the series and it looks like he did. Didn't he die of complications due to obesity?

According to Wikipedia, Cabot suffered a stroke and died in August 1977.

Cabot did miss a few episodes in season 1 due to an illness and was replaced by another actor during the interim.
