Default Lumpy and the scholarship

I don’t see how he would qualified for the scholarship even being a brilliant blocker in football since retake English I two years, retake US History, and it was stated by Lumpy in The Parking Attendents that as a senior still taking algebra vs Wally being an athlete all around a Letterman in three sport with strong grades yet he hadn’t gotten a scholarship. Wally seems to me to be better candidate for for a sports or maybe a academic scholarship. Did you actually work for scholarship back inn the early 60s as Wally discribed to Beaver?

Yes, it does sound suspect. Maybe they forgave two or three screwups? Doubtful, as the whole school would get scholarships.

Yes, and Fred gets a telegram that Lumpy is failing math. Later Ward greases the way for him to go to summer school and still get the scholarship. It's odd with his questionable scholastic history of being left back and now failing a subject, that he would get a scholarship over Wally, who undoubtedly has a good academic record and is great in sports.

And why would Ward use his pull for Lumpy and not call his State friend about Wally?

This script needed some help, but evidently Conway and MacLane didn't get any.

The lack of continuity, and inconsistencies made for fun viewing even as a kid. TV is so bad now we're scrutinizing shows some 60+ years old.

The fact that many of us prefer watching LITB, Dark Shadows, Father Knows Best, Bonanza, Combat, The Fugitive, etc., says more about the “quality” of television today.

Incidentally, I’ve recently been watching dvds of the British comedy/mystery series, Lovejoy, with Ian M Shane; it’s a very witty and stylish show. Many of the British shows are outstanding, like The Avengers, The Prisoner and Fawlty Towers.

The remake of All Creatures Great & Small is as enjoyable as was the original ACG&S.

How many letters did Lumpy have? Wally in freshman year, he lettered in 3 or 4 sports and had strong grades. Lumpy didn’t just have that bad math grade he had also been left back a couple of years that’s why he Wally’s year. It’s implausible even or especially back that would have gotten the scholarship and Wally would’ve been considered for one. Wally Swam, played basketball, Baseball and Football. Did you apply for a scholarship in a particular sport back then?

There was much talk before and at the party about how much Lumpy had improved--I'm not sure it was mentioned at any time how many letters he had. I'm not sure there was even any mention of football for him--I just remember in a few episodes they were going to a track meet. I'm not even sure we ever saw him wearing a letter on a sweater.

Yes, Lumpy was a few years older than Wally and was left back twice--Lumpy was driving in the fourth season. Today I noticed Fred mentioned a D in math, and I incorrectly wrote above about a failing grade.

I still don't get why Ward would call his buddy at State about Lumpy and not about Wally. And even if he did, wouldn't Wally say, hey what about me, your own son??

This episode sure re-emphasized what a jerk Fred was. From "big boob" for Lumpy when he wasn't getting the scholarship, to "they don't come any finer" when he was, after all.

Imagine the early seasons Lumpy getting the scholarship "What is it a big deal or something?"

We had plenty of meatballs earn athletic scholarships as long as the grades were Cs when I was in school.

Wally didnt earn a scholarship so Ward would not have interfered. Lumpy did, but then ha dad a misstep which could be fixed by summer school. It makes much more sense Ward would call in about that-Lumpy still has to earn the grade.
