Peacock's Saved by the Bell revival canceled after two seasons

The Peacock comedy from Tracey Wigfield that combined the old cast of the original 1990s Saved by the Bell with a new group of high school students to offer "a much-needed dose of reality" has been canceled after two seasons. Saved by the Bell, premiering to mostly good reviews during Thanksgiving Weekend in 2020 and reportedly performing well for Peacock, addressed important topics such as race, inclusion, class and education. It returned for its second season for Thanksgiving Weekend 2021. “We are so proud to have been the home of the next iteration of Saved by the Bell for both new and OG fans," Peacock said in a statement. "Saved by the Bell has been a cultural mainstay for more than 30 years and the new series, led by Tracey Wigfield’s superfan enthusiasm and signature witty humor, seamlessly continued the show’s legacy, all while allowing more audiences to feel seen. We’re grateful to Tracey, Franco Bario, our partners at UTV, the beloved cast, and the fans who have continued to champion one of the most iconic shows of all time."

Thanks for the news. The good thing is that the show was able to happen at all. Was it ever said why the Coach TV show reboot never did take place? Jerry Van Dyke was still here at the time, but yeah, whatever got filmed never did make it to any TV station.

Saved by the Bell reboot creator Tracey Wigfield answers burning questions about what would've happened in Season 3

Wigfield took to Twitter this morning to answer fan questions, two days after Peacock's cancelation of her Saved by the Bell reboot after two seasons. Asked about a potential relationship between Mitchell Hoog's Mac and Haskiri Velazquez's Daisy, Wigfield responded: “They would have gotten together and it would have been so cute!”

Very few of these streaming shows last more than 2 or 3 seasons anyway.

Why Saved By The Bell Was Canceled After Season 2

While there hasn’t been an official reason given for why Saved by the Bell was canceled, TV’s Top 5 podcast discussed the surprise decision on its May 6th episode. THR reporter Lesley Goldberg spoke about how the reboot was one of the last shows to be approved by the former Head of Programming at Peacock, Bill McGoldrick. Since then, the streaming service has been overseen by Susan Rovner and Frances Berwick. And, as Goldberg explains, along with their many other duties, Rovner and Berwick have been more focused on greenlighting “watercooler” series; shows that could be more likely to capture the audience’s attention, like the semi-autobiographical comedy from the headline-generating Pete Davidson. Other examples cited were upcoming series based on Pitch Perfect, Ted, and Twisted Metal.

The implication is that Saved by the Bell, which saw most of its positive buzz after season 1, wouldn’t appeal to a broad number of subscribers in a significant way to justify its continuation. It could simply be a case of new leadership setting different goals and wanting to establish a separate identity, as is common. But another factor might be that the viewership of Saved by the Bell hasn’t shown sufficient growth and might have in fact experienced a decline in season 2. Still, considering how streaming services rarely offer any concrete numbers, it’s difficult to know for sure.
