I didn’t think he looked bad with the mustache. What was big deal about with it his parents especially June? Naturally they wrote it the Girls and even his buddies thought it was terrible. Would it have been the school rules at the boys to have mustaches?

Yeah it seemed everyone made a big deal out of it.
In past threads we've commented it was odd he never saw Eddie and Lumpy during the entire school break. |

For me, it made him look older. He did not look like he was in high school anymore. It might be a good look for looking mature, but to be one of the guys in school, he wasn't one of them anymore.

A big reason guys grew mustaches in high school was to look older buying beer, and getting into bars without being carded. If you could get beer you could widen your scope of being in the in crowd, and dating more hot chicks. If a girl didn't drink they were less desirable to date also.
The mustache episode made me think how sensitive everyone is is a recurring theme that motors the show. Everyone is in total shock over a mustache? Then, Wallys ego is so fragile he's swayed to keep or lose the mustache by what people think. I guess if Wally said I'm growing it, I like it, I'm keeping it, screw everybody you'd have no show. |

The teacher gave him him grief just because he slouched in his desk. I remember kids doing that in high school, me included.

I think maybe June's unfavorable reaction may have been rooted in denial that her baby is now fully grown, and able to do what every adult male is capable of doing.
I also think that if Wally had grown a Van Dyke beard, every girl in his classes would've wanted to get him in the sack. I grew one of those back when I was in my early 40s and got nice compliments. It was maybe 25% grey, but if I did one now it would be more like 75...! |
