Food Price Shock - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Got a food delivery yesterday and it's from a privately owned store so prices have always been a bit higher but the quality is so good. Yesterday without asking the gal the price of a pt of Haagen Dazs ice cream I ordered it as a last minute item. Just got a craving and I have not had ice cream in many months and this was a topper....

When I was reading my receipt I saw where the pt was $6.99 I was expecting at least $4.99 with all the price hikes but $7.... I called the store and complained to the mgr just to vent and knew they would do nothing.

I checked my other online store to see their price and it was $4.99.

The thing is with all the hikes the prices will probably stay up there ongoing...Once the market has been changed, prices don't come down.

Yep,food prices are spiraling upwards, and they are also reducing quantity per container as a way to skim an advantage

Ritz crackers...historically sold with 4 rolls of crackers per box...33 crackers per roll, recently started offering a "Family Sized" package containing 6 rolls. But each of those rolls are only 30 crackers. So if you figure 3 crackers times 6 rolls....that's 18 crackers less than you would expect.

They also have started offering a "Family sized" package with 12 smaller rolls where each of the smaller rolls have only 13 crackers.....so that is like even 24 fewer crackers per box that the 6 roll "family size", but sold at the same price.

It's amazing how quick a roll of only 13 crackers disappears.

Yes, awhile ago in the bakery area of the grocery store (where prices are on the items baked in-house) some items were marked 1.99 and day-later expirations were marked 2.19.

Single-serve salads which were maybe 3.49 - 3.59 a month ago were marked 4.19 today.

The small boxes of cereal are really tiny now. Next they'll be going back to those mini-boxes they had in variety packs back in the 60s, but as a single box.

Virtually no container is the same size as it was 10 years ago. My mother, when she was alive, used to say it made using old recipes difficult because they'd call for (e.g.) a six ounce can which was then 5 ounces (which by now is probably 4 ounces). How low can they go?

Just about every item I buy at the grocery store has gone up, I really hate it. I've had to cut back and buy more of the store brands which are a little cheaper but they went up in price too. It's such a rip-off.

You can combat inflation of non-perishable and frozen foods if you have enough storage to buy in quantity when there's a good price. Also, sometimes you might be able to split up a bulk purchase with other family members or a neighbor.

Some stores still offer some good promotions, one in my area at times will run an "11 items for $10" deal. Discounters like Ollie's oftentimes will have foods at less than supermarket prices, though their stuff tends to be close-dated. I picked up some "Old El Paso Soft Taco Bake Dinner Kits" from a Dollar Tree at $1.25, less than half I'd pay elsewhere, and gave a few to my nieces.

Of course things like paper products and cleaning supplies last pretty much forever, so you should try to avoid being in such need that you overpay.

All I can say is that our leaders who are supposed to take care of us and we put our trust in them are letting us down as they often do.

Went to Aldi... ALDI, you know, probably the cheapest food store around, and bought a package of orange chicken that at its highest price was about $4 bucks, now it's $8. Crazy.

Perhaps it's just the conspiracy theorist in me. But I really believe that some of these shortages have been created just as a pretext to raising prices.
Once your favorite product is back in stock on store shelves, the higher price is less objectionable than "none available"

Well, since I question them all and believe they are chronic liars, I believe none of them, but their desires for $$$$, still think about the $7 I paid for a pint of ice cream....it won't happen again.

Working on a 6 pack of klondikes that were $5...they will last me 10 days or so.

Back when I was in my 20s, Aldi's lowest-priced bread was at 29 cents per loaf.

I recently received coupons from Kroger in the mail that had values as low as 40 cents. Too bad that savings inflation is nonexistent.

I once worked for a store years ago where I noticed they raised a product's price by 30 cents. The next week, they advertised the product at the old price and said, "Save 30 cents!"

Prices of everything is awful. We have oil for heat and our last bill was TWICE the price of our last. Then I hear that the price will still continue to go UP. Makes me think I should move. Who knows what the fall will bring. Scary!!!
