I was watching Entertainment Tonight this evening and they said that Catherine Zeta Jones is playing the lead in the movie version of Chicago. Does anyone, preferably Bethany, know why Bebe wasn't asked or didn't want the role? I would rather see Bebe in it of course. I was just wondering what happened.

I don't think it's anything personal with BeBe, but 9 out of 10 times, the actors that star on Broadway don't get asked to star in the movie. I guess the producers have their own idea of who should play certain roles.

I saw some footage from it on ET I think, it looked pretty good, I think Renée and Catherine will do a good job. They seem to have an all-star cast too, just look below.
Renée Zellweger .... Roxie Hart Catherine Zeta-Jones .... Velma Kelly Richard Gere .... Billy Flynn Queen Latifah .... Matron 'Mama' Morton John C. Reilly .... Amos Hart Christine Baranski .... Mary Sunshine Taye Diggs .... The Band Leader Dominic West .... Fred Casely Lucy Liu .... Go-To-Hell Kitty Deirdre Goodwin .... June Denise Faye (I) .... Annie Mya (I) .... Mona Susan Misner .... Liz Colm Feore .... Martin Harrison Sebastian Lacause .... Wilbur (June's Husband) Marc Calamia .... Hunyank's Husband Mary Ann Lamb .... Razzle-Dazzle Dancer Tara Nicole .... Razzle-Dazzle Dancer Patrick Salvagna .... Newsboy Chita Rivera Mike Haddad .... Courtroom Observer Joseph Scoren .... Harry |

we saw this play on Broadway and we thought BeBe was gonna be in it. We got Sharon Lawrence(NYPD Blue)..but she was better than we had expected she'd be.
That casting looks pretty crappy to me(just my opinion)for the movie. Why do they have to mess everything up????Oh,Richard Gere..the great singer...I'm sure....same goes for Renee Zellweger.....leave the singing to the singers, folks. I better shut up before they cast Madonna in a movie version of a bROADWAY PLAY AGAIN. eeeps. |

I agree with Christine. There was always something about Catherine Zeta that just yanked me the wrong way. I am just curious if they even offered Bebe the part. I know that Bebe loves doing Broadway more than movies or TV, but she just recently did Tadpole, so it would seem unlikely that she would turn it down because it was a movie. Oh well.

I think she is 43, Christine. Personally, I think there was a great injustice done. LOL Who knows with the way Hollywood is these days. No wonder Bebe likes to stay in the lights of Broadway.

Okay, I've been gone far too long... can't believe I didn't catch this post earlier.
First... stalker?! Ah! Mes think not. I'm just... her... long lost daughter, right Alanna? LMAO! Anyhoo... the only reason I haven't brought this discussion up on the board is because it completely disgusts me. Bebe refuses to talk on the subject, but she wasn't offered the role... ever. This is like a complete repeat of when they made the movie of Camelot... Julie Andrew's was brilliant as Guenevere, and wasn't even considered. It's sick, I tell you, sick! First, it wasn't because of her age... Velma and Roxie are both supposed to be late 30s, early 40s. In fact, when Ruthie Henshall played Roxie, she almost didn't use one of the greatest lines because she was only 25 at the time: "I'm older than I ever intended to be." The ONE and ONLY reason Bebe wasn't asked was because they wanted big POPULAR names. Had this been done in the 80s, I'm sure she would have been offered the role right off the bat. They're not looking to attract the Broadway crowd (hence ME) with this movie, because they're not stupid... we theatre goers WILL see it no matter what, if only out of curiousity. They're trying to attract the young teens who are uneducated when it comes to theatre. The only way they can do that is pulling in younger stars who appeal to them. I can't tell you HOW many kids I mention Bebe's name to who respond with, "Who?" and I say, "Lilith... from Cheers." "OH! HER!" Bebe's name alone wouldn't draw in the younger audience, and most of the older audience that would see the show has already been introduced to it. So, hence... Bebe had NO shot. Yes, she's very well known, and has done countless movies, so I think it's (omg, I wanna swear so bad right here) ridiculous. First of all, with all the popularity and recognition TADPOLE is recieving, now would have been the perfect time for her to do a movie of Chicago! I mean, look at all the reviews she's getting! Everyone who sees the movie says it belongs to Bebe. *sigh* Also, Chicago isn't a POP musical like Rent or Aida. It's a REAL musical... you can't get away with sticking POP stars in it! I heard Britney Spears may be making a cameo... I'm so disgusted. The only person I can truly say I'm looking forward to seeing is Chita Rivera, who's only making a CAMEO. Renee as Roxie is the biggest joke. And as MUCH as I adore Christine Baranski.... MARY SUNSHINE is A MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How the **** are they going to pull that off?! Lucy Liu as Go-To-Hell Kitty... MYA as MONA?! QUEEN LATIFAH as MAMMA!!!!!!!!!!!! OH-MY-GOD!!!!!!!! *Pulls her hair out of her head.* This movie disgusts me. Injustice is putting it far too mildly, Alanna. This movie is going to give musical theatre a bad name. It's going to end up on the list with Moulin Rouge. Bebe should be happy she wasn't included in the cast... she would just be involved in a flop, and she's too good for that. She should just be upset that they're ruining such a great musical and are going to give it a bad name!! |

Oh, btw... Catherine isn't playing the "Lead." Velma isn't the lead, Roxie is. Well, I suppose they can both be considered the lead, whereas Bebe won the Tony for Best Actress, and not best Featured Actress. Technically, however, Roxie is the lead.

Bethany, I have been wondering where Bebe's long lost daughter has disappeared to. I was dying for some insight.
I would have to agree with you on the popularity thing. Personally, and obviously, I would declare Bebe a greater actress than Catherine Zeta or Renee Zellweger. Like you said Bethany, so many people are uneducated about the truly good actors and so the studios do have to choose who the people are familiar with. What really outraged me about your post is the statement that Bebe wasn't even offered the role. I was certain that she was offered it, and possibly turned it down. But, like you said Bethany, if "actresses" like Britney Spears are going to make cameo appearances, do we really want to see Bebe next to them. While on the topic of Tadpole....I did hear the same thing, that Bebe was the heart of the movie. I am dying to see it, but no movie theaters within 100 miles of are playing it. I would have to travel to Philadelphia to see it. I don't understand that. I know it was kind of an underground film when it was first created, but with all of the hype that is behind it, you would think that more movie theaters would have picked it up. ...And the disgust continues. LOL |
