Sad Susan Jacks (The Poppy Family) 1948-2022

https://bc.ctvnews.ca/canadian-singe...warm-1.5876933

A Canadian singer-songwriter is being remembered by a Canuck icon as a down-to-earth person who was "charming" and "warm."

Susan Jacks died at the age of 73, according to Burton Cummings, who posted about her death on social media.

"Sad news," he wrote, sharing a black-and-white photo of the B.C.-based artist and confirming that she had lost her battle with health problems.

"I met Susan on my first trip to Vancouver way back in the Sixties. She made some great recordings," Cummings wrote.

He said his favourite song she ever sang was "Beyond the Clouds," but that she's most known internationally for "Which Way You Goin' Billy."

"Her recordings will live forever," Cummings wrote.

"R.I.P. Susan… we'll all miss you."

According to the B.C. Entertainment Hall of Fame, into which she was inducted in 2004, Jacks was born in Saskatoon. She "shot to international fame" as part of the Poppy Family, a band she was in with her then-husband Terry Jacks.

The song Cummings said she's most known for sold three million records worldwide and reached the number one spot in Canada, the BCEHF says.

Jacks was a Juno Awards nominee was once voted best new country artist by music fans in Oklahoma.

Default She will be missed...

I remember my mom had The Poppy Family, “Poppy Seeds” album when I was little that she'd often listen to, but the unfortunate environment I/we were in made her albums leave me with unfavorable memories.

However, a few years ago I was wondering... “what could I get mom for her birthday?” I was wracking my brain trying to come up with something extra, extra special. So, I thought I'd do an online search for some of those albums that she had when I was little, that had been long gone. She had given them all away several years ago. I was really excited to find a CD of The Poppy Family "A Good Thing Lost: 1968-1973", which contained many of those songs she used to enjoy listening to.

My mom and I met for lunch at Applebee's for her Birthday, and afterwards we went out to my car, and she opened up her present, which was that CD and we sat there and listened to the music, and I felt such a connection with my mom. As I said earlier, all that music had less than favorable memories due to the unfortunate living circumstances back then, but here we were getting to listen to that old music together. I very much enjoyed it and I know she did, too. Those memories, to this day, feel priceless!!

Some of our favorites of The Poppy Family are, “Tryin”, “Winter Milk”, “I Was Wondering” and the nationwide smash hit, “Which Way You Goin', Billy?”.

After my mom passed away in 2014, Susan's beautiful voice and singing became even more special to me, so I did a search to find more music that she recorded to add to my collection. In that search I also found a great more recent video performance she did of, "Which Way You Goin', Billy?"
