Sam & Diane--Off and On - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I'm interested in knowing just how much time Sam and Diane were a couple. I know they hooked up in season one, then came Frasier, etc. Does anyone with this knowledge feel ambitious enough to give me the actual timeline?
Were they more off than on or more on than off? It appears to me they were split most of the time.
In Diane's 5 years at Cheers, how often were she and Sam a couple that were together?

Okay, this is coming from off the top of my head but this is what I think....

Season 1-Not a "couple" until I guess Showdown. It depends if you declare them a couple there or not.
Season 2- Couple until the end of "I'll Be Seeing You"
Season 3-Diane was with Frasier...not a couple. Sam did go off to rescue her in the last episode of the season "Rescue Me"
Season 4- Not a couple, but a lot of talk about it. Frasier is out of the picture now. The last episode of the season "Strange Bedfellows Part 3" is when Sam proposes.
Season 5-A couple for the first half of the first episode of the season "The Proposal". When Diane turns Sam down they are not a couple for a good part of the season, until in "Chambers vs Malone" Sam reproposes to her in court. Then they are a couple until "I Do, Adieu" when Diane leaves to write the book.
Season 11- "One For the Road" they are a couple for part of those eps, and then split again.

I think you are right about them being an official "couple" for not much of Shelley's time on Cheers. But, there was always that romantic spark there. So it made up for it.

It sure did help. Thank you so very much. From what you wrote, I estimate they spent less than 2 out of 5 seasons as an actual couple. Yet, as you say, there was that romantic spark. That flirting or pretending they didn't want to be together was often more fun than when they were actually together.
