That explains everything...I have a friend who says we're devolving! I now know why I can't get a love-life...there's people who are married to their phones!

Technology is like a drug... it has uses, and abuses.

When it keeps the slackers pacified, allowing me to thrive while they are distracted...then I'm all for it. But when the idiot in front of me in traffic is too absorbed in his phone to notice that the light is changed....I'm decidedly less tolerant.

Back in 2012 after that big derecho, 3/4 of our town was without power for 4 days. And the mobs at fast food restaurants still having power, by people wanting only to recharge their cellphones ...was amusing.

I guess with wi-fi enabled smart phones, they are still able (at wi-fi hotspots) to surf the net even after they run out of minutes?

That's what I find most irritating about the pervasiveness of smartphones. All the homeless clogging up the portal at Starbucks, etc

Oh brother, I'm not out there like I was all my life, but it's true the homeless/vagrants all have their smart phones..no food but phones.

And it seems like "having minutes" isn't even a requirement at wifi hotspots?

They can scavenge some elses discarded smart phone out of a dumpster, and so long as they can get the batteries charged, they can sit all day and surf.....stinking is evidently optional for some of them.
