Default I decided to watch the entire season 5 in 20 mins to analyze JJ and Michael

odd sleeping situation. This is the season Florida is in Arizona which means her room was available. But even though she is not there the whole season JJ and Michael is still seen sleeping on the sofa in episodes

Thelma Moves Out-5th episode......JJ and Michael on the couch

I had a Dream-17th episode...JJ sleeping on the couch alone

No one is seen sleeping in the room and the first time the inside of the room was seen was in episode 21 when Grandpa and Lena came to visit. But even him and Lena wasnt seen sleeping in there

Very strange

Speculation: Perhaps the production crew didn't want the show to be so obvious to the viewers that Estelle would indeed be not returning. A clear sign would have featured plots or sub-plots involving either son moving into the vacant room. While it became painfully obvious that Florida was MIA week after week, there was some hope that she would indeed return.

Good Times Fans also raised their eyebrows at the fact that JJ and Michael didn't move into Florida's room after she moved to Arizona. A Fan surmised they didn't move into her bedroom out of respect for her.

They did move into their her room but it was off screen. They were always seen coming out her room but never seen going in except for the time Grandpa henry was in there

In the episode Thelma Moves Out. Thelma brought her date home and when they went to sit on the couch JJ and Michael was sleeping and she asked them why was they out there if they had their own room. JJ said penny was sleeping in there and then Thelma said why couldnt she use my room? Then that argument led to her moving out

OK, now I remember that episode. The best part of that episode was when Thelma pushed down that tramp into her box of chocolates that was on the sofa. The tramp deserved it, trying to put the moves on Thelma's man and whatnot!

Yep, there was that tank of a dude who ate all the groceries. Poor Thelma had to chip in for groceries that she never even got a chance to eat!
Then there was that dork with the glasses. I think his pet was a tarantula.
